I recently bought a San disk 32GB to increase memory on my don't xperia z3 compact and I moved my music and pictures into this storage from internal.

The SD card then didn't work with Google play music or pictures so I restarted the device and reloaded the SD. Now when I load files onto the SD they work for a while then file commander shows random character folders and all the music/pictures cannot be read

I would appreciate any help/solution anyone can give me

First thing I can think when this happens, that content won't read from a new SD and other funky things happening like file-name and folder-name corruption, is that it could be a duff or counterfeit, and more so with brands like SanDisk, Sony or Samsung. There's a lot of them around especially from Ebay and Amazon vendors. 32GB SD shouldn't be a problem with a modern phone, it tends to be larger capacities like 64 or 128GB that can be particular I found.

OP where did you buy the SD?

That's because Music still expected to find the media in internal storage. There's an option in Play Music's settings to select external storage. The Gallery app, however, should detect images automatically; if an exernal card is detected at startup it will be scanned.

I bought the SD on Amazon but I think that it is just really slow and that is what is causing the issues

Thing with Amazon, there's buying directly from Amazon themselves products that they stock, and then there's buying from third-party vendors who sell via Amazon, and Amazon takes a commission, just like Ebay. And with SDs it's very often the latter. What you described in your OP sounds like all symptoms of a counterfeit SD...i.e.."shows random character folders and all the music/pictures cannot be read". There are tools to test for fake or duff SDs, and to test speed. H2testw is one.

I had this issue last year with a Samsung galaxy s-3, I was having multiple issues with the device, when i went to unmount the sd-card my device said no sd card present. So i tried to transfer the photos and videos from the sd card and camera file to a computer there was some software miscommunication long story short i ended up factory resetting the device, erasing the sd card and phone. I took the sd card out and sim card reinserted went through the set up process and went on , i did two or three more factory resets because of device issues, finally i had to get a replacement which ended up being a nexus 4, i inserted the sd card from the galaxy s3 which had endured three factory resets and all the photos and videos i thought were loss suddenly came up, i did lose around 1400-1500 in the camera file
Sadly though 30 days the nexus 4 got some virus and completely screwed up the sd card and device

Hi,

i am experiencing the same problem. I have tested methodically and there is no issue with the SD card, or the authenticity. For reference, I have been having issues using a 64GB Samsung card, so have others, see here: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperi...my-Xperia-Z3/m-p/871575/highlight/false#M1867

Does anybody know of a fix, or alternatively, can suggest a brand of card which they have not experienced any corruption or stability issues with?

I can't offer a fix but over several years, and several phones, I've never encountered any issues with SanDisk Extreme microSD cards.

This might just be down to dumb luck but it's good enough reason for me, even though I prefer Lexar CF cards for my camera. :)

Does anyone know how to actually format the SD card if the usual method via settings > storage > Erase SD card doesnt work?

When I select the above option, it just goes through the motions, says its unmounting then deleting but then all the files are still there afterwards. I did a brief search and someone suggested a program called 'SDformatter' installed that, but doesnt seem to give any option to select my phone's SD card (or any drive for that matter).

I really need to format my SD card as I cant read anything on it. And continually getting frustrated by Z3 Compact's internal storage limitation.

Thanks for any advice.

SDFormatter only works with external card readers; it can't access cards when they're connected in MTP mode, as happens when the phone and PC are linked via USB.

[...] o far I reacon these xperia's a unless junk

The Z3 Compact officially supports capacities up to 128GB (see here), and the Ultra series are high-quality UHS-1/Class 10 cards capable of 48Mbps with added durability. I use two 64GB cards in both my Xperia Z and my Z3+ without any problems, so my initial suggestion would be to check the card with SD Insight to ensure it's what you expect it to be.

Ok does that sd insight allow you to check the sd card performance

Hi Guys!

I just upgraded my sd card for my xperia Z5 unit, from 32gb to 64gb. I put the 32gb sd card to my xperia z3.
Upon inserting the SD card to z3, the sd card was not recognized at all. I connected the said sd card to my PC and it worked just fine. I formatted it by 'right clicking' and noticed that the default type is just 'FAT'. Nevertheless, I re-inserted it to z3, still no luck.

I came across a forum suggesting to use 'SDFormatter' to reformat the sd card to FAT32, which I
