Sling Box owners rejoice!

I've never used Slingbox, but essentially this would let you watch anything through your home TV directly on your phone, is that right?

What kind of costs would I be looking at? Is it just the cost of the box or is there a monthly fee? What I be fine ordering a used box off of ebay or something or is the older technology not as good?

only thing you pay for is the Sling Box itself, super easy to install and super easy to use. If you're a big sports fan like me and hate blackouts due to the region you're in, this is the answer. You can access DVR, OnDemand, settings, anything on the cable box. NO FEES! There are different boxes that cost more and do more but the basic one works fine and I have had it for at least 2 years now and couldnt live without it. Once I get the app (speculated to be $30, worth every penny IMO since its a one time app cost) my DInc will do everything i've always wanted in a smart phone!

You can buy a basic one, which supports HD, for $100-$150. If you have Dish Network, the VIP-922 has sling built-in anlong with a DVR, and costs the same as the 622/722 dual-tuner DVR boxes, on per month basis:

I had a TP2 before the DI and used the slingbox software on it. Does anyone know if you can transfer a license from the WM version to Android? I really don't want to have to spend another $30...

Different software...most likely you're going to have to pay for it again. I have a beta version for my WinMo phone that still works after 2 years. There is a sign-up link on Sling's site for being notified when the Android version available...maybe a beta is out for download?

I've also heard that the new sling application for Android will not work on the older sling boxes... Can anyone verify this?

This is most likely true. I was on Windows Mobile before the Incredible and when they released the most recent Windows version, it didn't work with older Slingboxes. You'll most likely have to have the Solo or better.

I believe it will not work on the old Slingbox Tuner and AV boxes, but will work on the current Solo and HD ones. Like cmram said, I also was using Windows Mobile on my Fuze before the Inc. I used a WM 2.0 sling mobile version (I cant remember the exact version) and it worked, but a message popped up stating that future software releases may not work on my AV Slingbox and gave me a link to purchase a new one at a discounted price.

As a slingbox owner since July '05 within a week or two of when it came out, I have a few thoughts here, as I have been in touch with them a few times over the years about some of these things...I'll just hit them in order.

I had a TP2 before the DI and used the slingbox software on it. Does anyone know if you can transfer a license from the WM version to Android? I really don't want to have to spend another $30...

I asked them this a couple of times before I got the incredible and got two different anwers from cust service.

1) That we will be able to transfer the license to another device without a problem. (No specific info given here so may not be the most knowledgeable rep...take it for what its worth)

2) That since the app will be sold through the android market, much like the Apple app store, whichi is the only thing I was able to get actual information on how it is handled, sling will not be handling sales of the android application so they won't be able to transfer the license.

(Here it gets a little tricky, and customer service might have to make some exceptions if you pull the "I've been a customer since....etc lines to get them to give you a free copy somehow")
Note: I never paid for my Windows Mobile License in the first place cause at one point, maybe a year before I got my wm device in feb '08 sling said that as a customer "thank you" they were giving away one free license key to anyone who purchased the original slingbox within the first 6 months of its release. When I got my WM device I called and after talking to a manager or two I was able to get them to send me a free license key.

Again, take it for what its worth cause they have changed owners since their debut, and shifted their call center to India or something. When they started and I called within the first year or two to get tech support, or get a replacement power adapter it seemed like I always got the same nice customer service rep in San Fransisco named Gary. I guess that a change in customer service is inevitable when a company grows like sling.

I've also heard that the new sling application for Android will not work on the older sling boxes... Can anyone verify this?

Like I said I have the original slingbox, within a couple of weeks of its debut and its always worked fine for me on any platform. I've gotten them to say that its just that they don't test or support it with the older sling models, so I guess YMMV.

Different software addressed above, but I'm in the beta program from sling and have been a beta tester of slingplayer desktop versions as well as windows mobile beta versions in the past. When I decided I'd be getting an android phone, maybe 2 or 3 months ago, I updated my profile on the beta page to show that I had an android phone to be selected for future beta tests. Havent received anything yet, and a few weeks back when the above article first came out, I emailed Sling beta support to ask about being in an android beta program and got this response:

I have the PRO: Sling Media Support - Slingbox PRO

The latest software works on the TP2. I remember having to do a firmware update on the slingbox before the web software would work, then the new software for WM came out shortly after that matched the new theme of the desktop and web software. Have the Tuner and AV boxes received upgrades to work with the web player? I wouldn't be surprised if that's the technology that they are basing these mobile software versions on...

If you're hoping to use the phone to use the web access, it won't work. My N900 has full Flash and Fennec support, but it will not work. Web based access to the sling box is limited to desktop PCs/MACs and requires some ActiveX updates, which the mobile browsers do not support.

I have yet to have a problem with my original slingbox not working with any platform slingplayer: desktop, windows mobile(pre 2.0 and 2.0), blackberry, iphone, web based, palm(not webOS) works with them all...

A couple things. The license can usually be transferred. I did it between Windows Mobile and Blackberry several times. When I got an iPhone I had to buy again because it's sold through the market and no way to transfer. Will probably be the same way on Android.

As for support with older Slingboxes. I also have one of the original units and I've never had any trouble. The newer software versions say they aren't compatible but they work fine with my box. I think there might be some features not supported with the older ones but what you need works.
