REALLY, contacts need area code to show who is calling?

Do I really need to change all my phone numbers to have area codes in them?

When people call, for example, it shows 619-423-5666 instead of "Work" which is saved as 423-5666.

Do I really have to change every one of them and start saving numbers w/ zip code?

Wow, I haven't had to do this on ANY phone.

The Verizon DARE for sure I did not have to do this.

Pretty odd.

When I had windows mobile phone, didn't have to.

Even my Nokia N-Gage way back when, I didn't have to put in area codes.

I've been having the same issue with mine... pretty lame if you ask me, but I've been meaning to update my contacts anyhow... it's annoying when I'm out of town if I go into contacts and dial my brother, and it tells me I need an area code. May as well for this reason too

I've had a Dare and needed to do this with the area code, so I just went ahead and did it with the Incredible figuring it'd have the same requirement.

That is the reason I started doing this many MANY years ago. If you leave your "home" area code you have to enter it.

had the same issue, use contact cleanup app (free)., takes 2 seconds and adds your area code to all needed numbers

I feel like it's always a good idea to have the area code with your numbers. . . Unless you live in a small area, do not know anyone out of the small area, and do not plan on leaving said small area.

Likewise I've always put the area code even if it's local. Everything is pretty much unlimited long distance, but there is so many different area codes in some locations like mine for example (DC metro area). Combine 3 states: VA, MD and DC and there is a whole cluster of area codes. Thankfully I had this 10 digit habit years ago.

I think starting in July you have to dial with an area code from all phones including landlines. I read that somewhere but I don't believe everything I read...

I have noticed the same issue. By way of comparison, my Moto Droid would recognize numbers dialed without an area code, even if srores with an area code.

I haven't been able to dial a phone number without using an area code since the late 90's. Didn't even occur to me that it was possible anymore.

It's a good habit to get into, anyways. With number portability, people with random area codes are all over the place.

rockokma, I'm with you. None of my previous cell phones have required an area code.....my last being a Dare. I haven't used area codes in my address book for a long time. But then again, I am one of those small town girls who rarely gets out of my area code.

I'm off now to add area codes to all my contacts

The requirement of 10-digit dialing has nothing to do with a specific make/model of phone. It has everything to do with FCC regulations. If you reactivated your old phone it would also require 10-digit dialing.

I still do not have to use the area code when calling from my new Inc. The only problem I had was that the numbers I had stored did not have the area code so when I had an incoming call, it wasn't matching up with my "People".

And I did have my old Dare reactivated for 5 days while I waited for my second Inc to be delivered. And again I didn't need area codes.

I've had nothing but Moto flip phones and they never required me to put in the area code. When I entered numbers into my contacts I always put the area code in so if I was roaming it would always go through. But when I dialed if I left off the area code it still showed the contact name during the dialing screen on every one of them until my last Moto flip, the Entice. I thought it was odd that it didn't show the contact name unless I dialed the number EXACTLY as I had it stored in my contacts, but after seeing the Incredible doing the same thing I figured it must be some new industry standard. For those who haven't been able to do dial without the area code maybe the manufacturers of your previous phones switched to that before Moto & LG (Dare) did.

My dad is using one of my old phones that didn't require the area code and showed the contact name. It was reactivated on his line only about a month ago. I'll try his out tomorrow and see if that is the case. I would think that would have to do with the phone software and to change that would require a software update for those changes to take effect.

Wow. Talk about difference between small towns and cities. Where I live even if I am dialing another 714 area code number, it may not actually local. In other words, even though I have 714 number I have to dial 714 to make sure the call goes through correctly. 714 here covers so big of a territory with probably a couple million people. I've always had to dial the area code first.

All of the region that involves western Washington is away from metropolitan portion of King, Pierce, and additionally regions of Snohomish and Bainbridge Isle. They were during the past the section of 206 area code. 360 area code ended up being one of the initial area codes that was without N1X or simply N0X shape. It means that The second digit of the area code isn't 0 or maybe 1.
