Transferring contacts WITHOUT having to use a google account

Ok, so I honestly know nothing about android contacts and google accounts or any of that.. But right now I have a Pre. Does my memory serve me correctly that I can transfer all my contacts from my Pre to my Evo online at sprint.com?

With my smart phones, (palm and WM) I have saved my contacts as a *.csv that can be opened by any spreadsheet program (eg. excel) and imported it to the other phone. I am confident that if you search you will find an Android app that can import/export *.csv.
You can also use the *.csv file to import / export Google or Yahoo contacts.

As long as your mac has application to open .csv, then it is ok.

Another way to do this is through bluetooth. The only thing im not certain about is if you have to approve each and every contact as it transfers or can you do it all as one big transfer.

google "missingsync" or "Mark Space" (same thing, first is app name 2nd is dev name). intergrates w/ contacts on your mac (or whatever windoz computers use) but thats if you already have the contacts on your computer to begin with (but you can "find" ways to get them there either use other versions of missingsync for each phone OR the vCard way - and by find i mean "download" the pre version from somewhere, then pay for the android version that you can/will continue using)

I used a free utility called TBExport.

The Bluetooth idea is also good.

I too have a Pre. Are you using Preware? There's a patch out there that will allow you to dump and e-mail all of your contacts into a vcf file, which can then be imported into virtually anything else. That is your most viable method of "doing it yourself."

I would recommend just using Google since Android is very integrated with it anyway. Pre syncs seamlessly with Google and Exchange so just get a Gmail account if you don't already have one (PM me I can invite you if you need one), sync your contacts from your Pre to Gmail, then when you get your Evo, sync that to Google.

I haven't done any kind of desktop sync since I had phones that integrate with Exchange (work contacts) and Google/Gmail (personal contacts).

I guess I could export them somehow if I really wanted to but it's almost as pointless as a floppy disk these days what with free services like Google providing the kind of contacts, calendar, email, etc. sync you used to have to pay for with Exchange or Blackberry.

I should point out, the initial obstacle for Pre users is if you've just been using your Palm Profile to store your contacts, there's no direct way to export them to transfer over to Google, Outlook, etc.

The easiest method at this time, to rip your contacts out of your Palm Profile, is to use the Preware patch I mention above.

When I went into the gmail account that I'd be using as the primary account, I just deleted all the contacts that were in my gmail account and then imported the .csv file into google. Worked perfectly and saved me some time from getting rid of (or merging) duplicates. The only thing I don't like on Gmail Contacts is, it doesn't allow you to display a "nickname," like on Outlook. So, any contacts that I have set up with a "nickname" or "display name" show up with their full name. I'll have to figure out how to work around that. I did the same thing for my Google Calendar, but I didn't have any prior appointments in my google calendar, so that was pretty simple.

Bump is an app on Android and iPhone OS that allows this type of sharing. They claim it works across platforms too, but I haven't tried that. I have bumped from iPod Touch to iPod Touch and it worked flawlessly. Does apps (free) and pics as well as contact information.

Not sure I'd want to try it for every contact I have, but I'd choose bumping over re-entering any time if there isn't another single-button solution.

Can't answer #1, cuz I don't know.

#2 - It brought over the contact picture, I believe. Not sure 'bout the notes, as I don't have any notes attached to contacts. It brought over the "group" for sure (just added whatever group name that didn't already exist in Google contacts). I created a CSV file for my Contacts and Calendar. I don't think Google has Notes or Tasks, but I didn't look for it, so I could be wrong.

If you have a Windows Mobile phone, can't you just sync it to your desktop Outlook and then export that contact list?
