How to disable "heads up" (popup) notifications in Lollipop?

A little background here,
http://androidforums.com/android-lounge/873585-android-l-ux-decisions-vs-preferences-pop-ups.html

In that thread I wondered if google was going in the right direction with their pop up notifications. This morning I flashed the leaked final Lollipop build for my 2012 Nexus 7 dev tablet. After playing around with it for just 5 minutes and receiving hang out messages galore while trying to read browse the settings menu and play store, I've come to the conclusion that my opinion was in fact correct - these pop up notifications make me want to send kittens to meet their maker - violently.

I can't stand them... I really want to have the pre-lollipop notification system back and I was told that the pop up notifications could be disabled - however I'm not finding that option available anywhere in the settings. Anyone know if thats available or am I SOL?

Thanks in advance.

So seriously, it takes root to disable heads up??
The only experience I have with lollipop was a custom rom and they could be disabled.
I like them so I kept them but I can see how much of a pita they must be for people!

Same here.

They're not fantastic, but I can live with them. Also, from experience, there are 3rd Party apps which handle them much better than the OS does.

I no longer have root but i got rid of them completely. "Heads up notifications" are called Interruptions and Priority Interruptions, depending on how much you want. Goto Settings>Device>Sounds & Notifications>Interruptions and adjust them to how you want them. I completely loathe them so I don't have them anymore at all. I bought this phone to use as a digitizer for my work. Prior to the update, having had no interruptions (aptly named) every 5 seconds, I couldn't work on my art or read to my kids in peace. What the hell were they thinking? I couldn't listen to music or watch videos

The worst part is it came on all night causing my battery to get hot for some reason, which NEVER happened prior to the update. I am convinced that updates are created to break our phones so we'll buy more. Either that or they are incompetent. Or a little of both. Anyway, hope this helps.

OK I might have found out the solution for this problem
Last night I was trying to figure out what to do about this just like you all and then I happened to come across this app called "Heads Off - Ticker on"
I installed and just started the app and now those heads up are gone.. Just the notification is seen.. I'm satisfied with this app. You could give it a try.
