Help Really strange problem with my Google G2 (HTC Magic) network

Hi everyone...

I've just returned home to my country Malaysia and I brought along a HTC Magic, Google G2 phone from Japan.

Upon arriving, I discovered that the phone is roaming. I made several calls and everthing is fine so I decided to buy a Malaysian sim card to use.

This is where it became strange...

I get a Full Signal bar reading with an "X" on the left top of the signal bar. Tried to make a call and I get the message "Not registered to Network.

So I went into Setting and looked at the Network Settings, which looks fine to me. Just to be safe, I even tried disable/enable 2G.

Also did a network search, and upon getting the network provider, I tried to connect to the local network provider and keep failing.

So, thinking it is a setting problem, I even hard reset the unit to get the same result.

I've heard that some phones can be simlocked, but this is crazy. BUT, when I put my Japanese card back inside the phone, it is happily roaming again.

Can any one out there please help. Thanks and Cheers !

Is the phone unlocked and does it have the right radio for the provider? If the freqs are anything like over here then it might work on one provider but not the other.
Does a scan show the providers and is the APN set for the one you need?

You mentioned that the phone in your country works on 1 provider but not another? In My Malaysia, we have GSM900/1800 and UTMS900. Question is, if the phone really had frequency problem, how come when I reuse my Japanese card, I am able to call again.

To be sure, I googled to reconfirm the spec works.

As for the simlock, I would guess that the phone is unlocked, because if it were locked, it would show something like "Enter SIM UNLOCK CODE". I did buy the code to unlock, but don't know where to key in.

When I do a network scan, it detects all the 5 network providers avaliable, but when I try to lock into the network which I am using, it does not happen.

I don't know all the ins and outs of the various countries and how unlocking should work in your case. Which provider is the working sim using? Is your local sim provider using that same provider? That would be your easiest solution.
My own phone sees several providers, is unlocked, but will only work on the providers that the phone is actually compatible with. I'll guess that you are seeing systems that your phone can't work on otherwise you would have seen the unlock popup or some indication of what is wrong.

Another thing, you might need to add APNs for the providers. If the phone is actually compatible with your provider choice then that is the likely problem. It is a one time manual config but you have to find an APN list that will work.
