New line price

Yes, that definately sounds feasible.
I forgot one important piece of info, I asked the same question at BB today and they guy said no because the actual day that I received would be outside of 30 days, now I don't know if he was just being lazy and not wanting to have to take the phone back or what. I've tried chatting with Sprint customer service about it but they are clueless and can't answer anything.
Well, what about this, I return the Hero flat out, what happens to my number, does it go back to my old carrier or disappears into the clouds with all the other numbers?

Do you happen to know someone with an old Sprint phone lying around, that they no longer use? Have them activate & port your number to that in the interim. For example, I still have an old Treo 800w and Treo 700p that can still be reactivated on Sprint.
if they activate then they can't port out. if they port out, they will face ETF...

best bet is to call sprint and let them know. porting out will cause ETF in sprint system automatically.

Correct. I did this once when the Pre was coming out. I bought the instinct s30 and used it for 29 days but the Pre was still 2 weeks away so I returned the instinct and got and old HTC touch off of my sister. I activated the Touch and used it until the Pre was released then I went in an bought the Pre at the new customer price. Just make sure you call Sprint and confirm that you will still have the new customer upgrade available. Luckily I didn't even have to pay a restocking fee.

kcs7272, that sounds like the answer I was looking for, I'll call sprint tomorrow and ask them if that will work and if so then I'll just buy a used phone off of craigslist to use until the Evo is available.

Bek, I'll check out that site as well.

ichiban, sounds like that will work.

Thanx all once again for the suggestions.
not a problem. forum is a place to help...

to be a little nazi, you should use the thanks button! LOL

I just called sprint customer service and was told that if I return the phone and keep the service that I will not keep the new customer pricing for the Evo and if I cancel everything out that I will lose my number, so I guess I'll have to try and save up for it at full price or lose the number and deal with a pay as you go phone for a little while till it comes out, of course if I go that route then I will return the hero as close to the 30 days as possible.

Since you're a brand new customer, you're not going to have any sway with Retentions unfortunately... they can pull all sorts of crazy things out of their magic hats.

That being said, I'd keep trying. Jump over to SprintUsers.com and see what folks there say - they're all rabbid Sprint folks and maybe a CSR there might even take pity on you and help you out directly?

I was in the same situation as you. I signed up with Sprint before knowing the release date of the EVO. I thought I'd like the Hero fine until something better came along anyway. I hated the Hero. Rather than stay on Sprint and not qualify for a discounted phone that I wanted, I ported my numbers to Verizon. I was in my 30 days at Sprint, so no ETF.
Now, I will port back in to Sprint at the end of my Verizon 30 days, hopefully right in line with the EVO release. And I get to use an Incredible in the mean time and love it.

I say call again! I swear I got the instinct used it for 29 days and returned it to get the Pre at new customer pricing. if you read the return policy you can return your phone within the 30 days one time and switch to a different model. I fthere is something wrong with your phone and you want to keep that model you can do it more than once within the 30 days. You are intitled to return your device for a different model in that 30 day period

That is wrong call again! Read Sprint's return policy to them. You are entitled to return your phone and exchange it for a new model one time in the first 30 days.

I pulled this right from Sprint's site:

For existing customers upgrading devices and accessory purchases
So you just traded in your old Sprint device for a brand new one and … it’s not quite what you expected. Too big. Too small. Not quite the right color red.
No sweat. You’ve got options. As long as you’re within the first 30 days of owning your new device or accessory, the Sprint 30-day Satisfaction Guarantee lets you either exchange your device for a different one or return it for a refund.
Exchange it for a different one. Just bring it back to the original point of purchase and we’ll help you find a device or accessory that better meets your needs.
Return it for a refund and re-activate your old one. Want to go back to your old phone and plan? We can do that.
