Rooting a Nexus is the easiest thing out there to do. Flash recovery using fastboot then make a backup and flash whatever rom and gapps you want or if you just want stock rooted just flash supersu. Done.

Agreed! Compaired to some devices...Anything with a nexus is as easy as it gets. Straight forward and simple.
I've jumped through hoops, done back flips, dealt with many of migraines and frustrations and this one time, I even had to tame a Lion... The King of the jungle for Pete's sake. Lol!
I've taking some huge risks with some devices, at Downgrading bootloaders, installing MAGLDR, DFT, 100% making my own special OTG cables, creating GoldCards and so forth with other devices, just to be able to flash a rom or gain root access. One of the many reasons that I love my N5!

Nexus is the only way to go imo. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of great amazing devices out there but none as easy to work with as a Nex and aosp and cm just doesn't run as well on a non Nex. That's my 2

Just got a nexus 5, and need some info. I'd like to be able to change the lock screen wallpaper, and add badges to the hangouts and gmail apps. Would rooting let me do this with an xposed module? Thanks.

Been awhile since I've looked at the xposed modules but I think you can accomplish this without root by using a custom launcher. Nova launcher can accomplish both of these things.

I had Light Flow installed, but deleted it because it was blocking my phone's signal. I only had it on the phone to change the color and speed of the LED. Can i change those settings in the phone's systems folders, if i root? Thanks for any help.

Hmm that's quite interesting that it ended up blocking your signal.

Unfortunately no rooting alone wont alow for you to have LED contr.
So without it either having a LED notification management app built/cooked into the ROM then the only other way is to use a LED management app.
Personally I haven't had any issues using lite flow lite and I've been using it since I flashed 5.0.

Good app! I used this one on the L test build and it worked fine for me then and it's had some 5.0 updates to the app.
I Might even give this one a test over lite flow and see which one works the better for me.

Cool glad that you found one that is working good for you.
I disabled Lite Flow and switched to over to using Light Manager yesterday and have been pleasantly impressed with it since switching. Seems to me that it is a bit smother and not as buggy.
It also has a bit more LED options/settings than Lite Flow lite offers.
So far pretty happy with Light Manager for now. With continue to test it out over the next couple of days.

Edit:
Plus with Lite Flow lite you get those pesky "Lite Flow Notifications" in the status bar pull down menu.... That is not present in Light Manager. Which I prefer.

Too many options in Lite Flow and Light Manager. That was the problem for me. LED Blinker has a lite(free) version. After using it for a while, i bought the pro version for $2.50. If you feel like it, check it out.

So is there just one twrp for all Nexus 5s? I know all major US carriers use the same model, so I can see just one for the US variant, but I would have thought the 820 and 821 would have separate recoveries? Also, I know it has been said previously in this thread that this method should always work, but I've read that 5.0 changed some security features so I'd just like to confirm that this will still work on my Nexus 5 on lollipop?

OK, so i decided that since i let my N5 work it's way up to stock 5.0.1, now was the time to root it. I tried, and now i'm back to "fresh out of the box 4.4.2". My goal was to be rooted, but still stock 5.0.1. Should i let it work up to 5.0.1 with the ota updates, and try again, or is there an easier way? Thanks for any help.


UPDATE: Got it. The problem was twrp 2.8.2.0. It took three times before i saw that TeamWin screen, and i was able to install SU.
