Root Root metro PCS GL with kitkat

Well if I can get it rooted, does anyone know how to enable the Wi-Fi tethering for free? Right now I use the USB tether through pdanet while using a user agent on windows 7 on my unrooted Metro GL.

There is an app called Foxfi that you can find on XDA, though the method you're using now honestly may give the best results. I've tethered using a few of the root tether apps and its just ridiculously slow to the point it's not even worth using.

I currently have this phone due to it being only $30 and it was a good deal with metro. But I do miss having root access. I don't have a computer and have looked up and tried just about every "one click root method" and "root with no pc" method and still no luck can anyone help me at all? I've done a ton of research and would like to have root on this phone.

jackroo, these things are phone specific. There is no root method for this phone that does not require a PC. Unfortunately its our only option until someone makes a one-click-root for our phone. Its really not that hard and it only takes a few minutes. You can even copy over EVERYTHING you think you will want (multiple ROMs and such) and once TWRP is installed, you can reboot into recovery at any time and flash whatever you like (there is CM12 for this phone, it is AWESOME, its super fast, it gets VERY good battery life and it has workarounds for nearly every issue, and the issues that arent fixed, yet, are VERY minor, there are also stock de-bloated ROMs and such as well as you can always make a backup of your stock ROM). Just find a buddy with a PC and it should only take you 30min or so, then you wont NEED one after that.

For sure. If you do decide to try out CM12, then here is a couple hints. Make sure you also get the latest version of Gapps that you want (I like the one that JUST has what is necessary for google voice, it doesnt include any nonsense like Google Books or Movies), and after flashing CM12, flash Gapps, and then SuperSU as well (even though CM12 is rooted already it does NOT include SuperSU, so you cant get root access unless you flash it, and the only way to reboot into recovery without root access, if you dont install it when you install CM12, then you have to manually restart into recovery, which is annoying). The stock camera doesnt work, so you just uninstall that one and use CameraMX from the play store (its free and works great). There is a workaround for reboots when using Maps or any location service when it is set to anything but "device only", and if you lose your mic when making outgoing calls, you just need to go into the audio settings and enable "sound on touch", but dont worry, the sound is super quiet so you wont even notice it. There are a couple other VERY minor issues, but nothing worth noting and most likely there will either be an update soon, or our device will go "official" and everything will be fixed, along with updates being enabled. Good luck with whatever you decide.

No problem. It was a pain to figure out all those workarounds. Most of them were just spread out across a couple different forums/threads and no one I know of (even the ROM designer) knows about the outgoing call mic fix. That one I picked up from a different galaxy phones post. Im trying to get ahold of Unjustified to let him know, but I dont have enough posts on XDA Developers to post on his threads. If anyone can, or if anyone can PM him feel free to let him know about it.

I wasn't even aware of the workarounds and such. The last devices I had that were rooted were an S3 and S4 with Sprint. They were super easy to maintain and mess around with and didn't have any issues. I may hold off on rooting this phone. I thought for some reason it would be easier

Hey, all...

Using Shabbypenguin method, I was able to root not one but two Galaxy Light t399n (the Metro pcs version) phones yesterday. Super easy! My advice to anyone else wanting to do this but unsure of how to do so would be to get the needed files from shabbypenguin.com and follow the instructions on the following website:

This set of instructions are the most clear, detailed set I have seen anywhere on the web. If you can follow simple step-by-step instructions, you will have your phone rooted in no time. I rooted two t399n phones yesterday... used the instructions on the first phone (my phone), didn't even need the instructions to root the second one (my gf's phone). It is literally that simple!

Do not download the files they tell you to download on theunlockr... you must use the file versions from shabbypenguin.com to root your t399n, as the files suggested by theunlockr are for the t399, which is the T-Mobile version of the Galaxy Light, and will probably brick your phone to some extent if you use them on your Metro pcs phone. Also, two steps generally not included are: 1) you need to download the usb drivers for your computer to recognize your phone in Odin, which are on the Samsung site, and 2) you have to set your phone to usb debugging mode. To do this, go to Settings > More > About device... once in the About device menu scroll all the way to the bottom until you see your Build number... tap your Build number 7 times, and developer options is unlocked (you will receive notification of this), which can be accessed in the More menu by simply pressing the back button on your phone. Go into Developer options, and enable usb debugging. These two steps I just told you about MUST be done before following the instructions I posted from theunlockr.

I have noticed while reading a few posts that when flashing TWRP to your phone using Odin (per the instructions), some people reset their phone when the green indicator in Odin says 'reset'... don't do this. Patiently wait until the green indicator on Odin says 'passed' before moving on to the next instruction (removal of the battery).

Found all this out by perusing the net for a few hours, took the plunge, and now I'm rooted (x's 2). Glad I did it. Thank you shabbypenguin for posting those files. I'm a noob to all this phone stuff (though I do have a pc tech background), btw.

If you're asking how to access the developer options menu go to settings>About Device then tap Build Number a few times and you will receive a toast that says something like "tap 5 more times to become developer" keep tapping Build Number and then the toast will change to "You are now a developer". Then hit back and you will now see a button bar labled Developer options

That post is almost a year old. Sure they have their answer by now. Plus the hidden menu that person is talking about is probably the one that lets you modify certain system settings.

Sure but clearly people are still reading this forum and if they're wondering the same thing they were, they would probably like an answer. And that hidden menu that you use to modify certain system settings you are talking about, it doesn't exist... The only semi similar thing would be build.prop tweaks or an editor, or developer options and there is no hidden menu to make tweaks to the build.prop file. Unless they're referring to an app you side load or download in which case it is not "hidden", its simply not installed. Lastly there is engineering mode, field test, etc. None of which offer settings relative to most users and those who do need to access the settings available within, know the codes to access them or have an app such as MTK Engineering Mode Start on MTK devices and so on.
So realistically your comment was less conducive to the conversation than my year late response. Just sayin'.
