How to do a complete factory reset on the Incredible.

Please note that all data will be deleted from the HTC DROID Incredible as a result of this procedure.
This process does NOT delete data stored on the microSD card.
I recommend backing up all of your personal data before proceeding.

1. Turn the power off. If your HTC DROID Incredible is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
2. Hold the Volume Down button
3. Press and release the Power button
4. You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
5. Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
6. Press and release the Power button
7. Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO

If you selected YES, all data including third-party applications will be deleted from the HTC DROID Incredible. Once the wipe is complete, the phone will reboot to its factory fresh state.

I suppose one is if you have phone functionality, the other is if its stalled and not working properly.

Correct, the first way is if you are in a situation where the OS won't load or are otherwise unable to navigate to the Reset screen.

By the way, I did a menu-based factory reset (not the voodoo keypresses described above ) and the data in my /emmc directory wasn't wiped. Not a guarantee that won't happen every time, but I was pleasantly surprised.

What's in the emmc directory?

That's where the camera stores photos and video if you choose the onboard memory setting, versus the sdcard. I had also put my mp3 folder in there when I copied it from my sdcard.

As long as you add the same gmail account. Yes you can. Most liekly they will auto install after you log in with your gmail account. as long as you don't open market right away. Ive noticed that messes up the reinstall of apps. at least on my droid.

What about free apps, do they auto install? I'm asking because I'm considering a factory reset on my inc because I am new to Android and loaded a ton of freebies (in addition to a couple paid) to try them out and want my "fresh start" to NOT include these free apps (I do love the 2 paid apps WeatherBug Elite & Robo Defender).

BTW - do NOT have the phone plugged in! My phone was USB connected to my Windows 7 laptop and it hung on the POWERING DOWN dialog until I disconnected it from the PC - go figure.

Just bought the wife a used Inc. I assume this is the first thing I should do when I get it?
