Hero Kernel Source Code Posted by HTC

why in the world do you think they would do this??

i am thiiiiiiis close to turning in my hero because i can't bear the touchscreen - the moment has a hw kybd and a better chip (and lame plug covers too - bleh!)

im thinking the hero UI will now be on any (rooted/hacked) phone that wants it - so the "need" to get an htc phone will be less

am i right??

HTC make great devices! the hardware is just as important as the software/OS. HTC have made a lot of OEM devices for carriers in the past before they started to use their own brand name. ericsson is another manufacturer i would consider but HTC is up there on top... that why i ditched the BB tour (had the curve on launch day then the Tour) for the HTC hero. the PRO and PRO2 are great devices and im real happy to be back on an all HTC bandwagon (fanboy alert)

You could be, but since it would be illegal, it wouldnt be just out in the open laying around.

Think Cyanogen / Google cease and desist. Only this time, it would be HTC and I dont think the suits would settle for just a letter. I'd bet HTC would go as far as to seek restitution.

The HTC Kernel source code was released as required by the GPL. HTC was getting bombarded with requests after the original Slashdot story since the GPL requires the immediate release of any source code that uses GPL code. The Hero kernel should have been released back when the phone was released in Europe. Them not doing so has been in direct violation of the GPL and I'm surprised how long they got away with it with how popular the phone has been in the EU.

Honestly, the biggest benefit of this being released is not opening up the ability to root the phone. It's the community being able to contribute back to HTC with fixing bugs that crop up. Not only is HTC working to make their phone OS better, now the entire world can help!

And the kernel has nothing to do with the Sense UI. The kernel is what communicates between the software and the hardware. The Sense UI is just the part of the display management.

As a power user I will attest the Hero is a tad slower than my 3G Iphone. Some of the features like the Blue tooth syc seem to lag a little. The keyboard is a draw. The predictive typing is better than the Iphone so it is a break even situation. I love the plan and would not trade my Hero for any current ATT phone. I think this will tide me over until a more powerful phone comes out in a year or two.

Too bad this kernel is Broken... You know all those threads about people having issues with Wifi? Its not the wifi thats at fault.

If you traverse a network that is sensitive to the TCP option ordering then your network connection will NOT work at all.

Gentoo Bug 242634 - [2.6.27 regression] unable to connect to *any* TCP port at any address beyond my router

This bug is confirmed in the HTC Hero Kernel source and Neither Sprint nor HTC care they are shipping a broken product to consumers. If the phone were not locked down then I could disable TCP Timestamps and work around the issue or totally recompile a kernel that would work.

But you can't... I wait for the day the phone can be rooted and it'll be FREE like it should be. Because right now the HTC Hero is no different then the iPhone.

I am not familar with what the posting of the kernel will do however I have read that it will allow developers to re-configure the phone to better optimize the speed of the device. I am wondering if this will also allow developers to figure out a way to gain control over what is stored and ran off of the SD card? It seems all apps downloaded go directly inot the main memory of the phone also everything is ran off of the main memory which eats up all of the space, and slows down the phone quite a bit, thoughts?

With a rooted phone you can tell it where to store apps etc. You can also configure a swap partition on the SD card. Lots of performance enhancements are only a root away.

I agree with you. The Iphone is a bit faster but boring. The phone is very good to me. Like any other phone, there will be some problems. But overall im not giving mines back. I just left WinMo and Im happy. I change my scenes according to how I feel that day and I think thats great. The FB intergration is awsome. Im connected all the time. And the hero moves at a descent speed to me.
