Incredible VS All Others: sensor accuracy testing

So a while back techcrunch produced a comparison of 4 different touchscreen accuracy. The article is here:

iPhone Beats Droid, Nexus One And Droid Eris In Touchscreen Performance
(FYI I'm not saying their results are correct or incorrect)

It seems to be an easy and accurate testing method of the touchscreen sensors' accuracy.

What I want:
  1. Please read that previous article in its entirety so you understand it.
  2. Reproduce the test using the Incredible
  3. Post pictures of your results
  4. Include any relevant info about your testing methods, the app you used, amount of practice you did before producing the results in the pictures you post, any strange results during the course of your testing, etc.
BONUS POINTS: include your other phones like the Droid, iPhone, Eris, Nexus One, etc. (ie. newer phones)

*** If you have an issue with the testing methods being proposed please explain IN-DEPTH what you take issue with AND WHY. If you are going to reference other threads PLEASE PROVIDE THE LINK.

One more thing: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT SKEW YOUR RESULTS TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOUR FAVORITE PHONE WINS. BE OBJECTIVE!!!

That test was debunked by a TON of people in other forums. There were so many shady things going on with that test. I was able to get better results than the Nexus and Droid with my Samsung Omnia.

Ok well regardless of the original results, the testing METHOD itself sounds like it makes sense. I'm not trying to argue the validity of the results of TechCrunch's results, I'm simply asking the users here to reproduce that test and show their results.

I haven't read the "debunking" thread though so if the method of testing itself was proven to be inaccurate please explain why or link to that thread. If there is sound reasoning to claim that this isn't a valid testing method I will request that the admins delete this thread. Otherwise my request remains.

+1 That test was complete BS.

The testing method was flawed and very difficult to replicate. Dozens of people tried and, while they may have shown something slightly similar, none were so "wavy" as to match what the "test" resulted in.

Plus that this "test" came out not long after Tech Crunch and Apple settled their disputes over the iPhone and that people would soon begin abandoning the iPhone (and iTunes) for alternative solutions that are better for consumers. Source

I just do not consider TechCrunch to be a reputable, independent tester. Along with unrepeatable results and unreliable results, the test shouldn't have much weight given to it.

Haha, I'm not trying to argue with you. Just stating what I've read about this test, and what I've tried. I have to find the thread which was on LS2.com. There were links to several others boards on there. I don't think you'll need the mods to delete anything :)

Regardless, your second post contains a massive picture. I'm sure most ppl would prefer if you didn't include huge in-thread pictures. Linking to the picture or linking to the source thread would be much more helpful. Also, double posting is considered rude in most places. Just some things to consider. I do appreciate your interest in this thread though, so thank you for that.

^ This is unnecessary. Clicking the thank you button on the Squintz82's post should be sufficient instead of making this post. You have also have made it unclear whether you disagree with the testing methods or the article's results. Please do not spam this thread unless you have relevant or helpful information. Thanks.

@ ALL FUTURE POSTERS: Please do not spam this thread with irrelevant opinions. Nowhere did I ask for opinions that are unsubstantiated by evidence (ie. YOUR OWN pictures, links to threads concerning this specific matter, or personal in-depth knowledge about the testing procedures being proposed.) Please do not mistake this for rudeness either; I simply do not wish this thread to be overrun with irrelevant posts. Thanks in advance.

I've got a few ideas on how to improve the testing method and reduce variables ( Such as finger thickness..natural small movements in the finger, etc. ) as well as improve the testing itself.

I am going to try and use something like small pieces of tape to temporarily mark increments around the phone. Then, using an anti-static home made capicitive stylus ( I don't use a stylus, so I'm not about to pay for one...but this way I hope to be far more precise and controllable. ) and a straight-edge I will draw fan patterns from a single point to all of the other ones ( this will test more than just 2 angles ). Rinse and repeat for the rest of the marks ( ignoring the ones I had previously done to reduce the time it takes. )

Then I also want to cut a piece of paper to have small holes in a precise grid to tap to create a series of dots ( I can see this being quite difficult with what I have atm. So don't count on it. ) This would help test the precision for things like typing on a keyboard.

We'll see how it goes:)

PS: Just wanted to mention I am in the middle of a battery test to test the long range potential for the battery ( shooting for 4 days. ) So, I won't be getting around to actually DOING this test for a few days.

Does your touch screen on the Incredible work to your satisfaction or not? That is all I'm worried about, I couldn't care less about tests. I have been extremely satisfied with the touch screen on this phone. Extremely. I don't need a test to tell me anything different.

I don't have one yet and I'm sure others are in the same boat. This may not swing our final decision but then again, maybe it will help us to be more confident in our decision. I understand where you're coming from but don't stone us for trying to run some tests on the screen.

All the rest of you who have contributed, good stuff! Thanks for helping out :). Keep it coming!

In EasyNote, the lines are nice and smooth. In the Draw! app, however, the lines are wavy like the Nexus One.

Well that's kinda strange... good to know though. I guess we can assume that Draw! is inferior software (at least when used in combination with the Incredible). It would be interesting to use EasyNote and Draw! on a few different phones and see if the results are similar. Hopefully the rest of the Incredible's system works more like EasyNote!

Sorry man, I just looked back at my post and it sounded worse than I intended it to be. My opinion means nothing, but without performing a test, I can tell you that the touch screen on this phone is downright fabulous. I've never had a better or smoother experience on any touch screen device that I've ever owned. And that's saying something since I've been an electronics junkie for many, many years. :D

Sorry if your feelings got hurt chief. It's a public forum that I posted relevant information and photos in, that you obviously overlooked. I'm sure everyone else appreciates the info I posted. I'll make sure I remember your rules next time I post. :)

And here's a link to the massive picture I posted and got removed for some reason. It looked small enough on my screen resolution: http://www.cartoonmonkey.com/nexus.jpg

I reported your earlier post for the reasons I stated and apparently the mods agreed with my logic. The link to the picture is helpful. The sarcasm is not.

@ OP: No offense, but for someone looking for testing favors from people, you sure are demanding. You sound like a science teacher giving instructions for a classroom experiment to a bunch of students. Nobody cares about your half-baked testing of the accuracy of the touchscreen. It's a great phone - go buy it, try it out for yourself and return within 30 days if you don't like it. Geez.

@theineffablebob, thanks for the tests! I realize they wouldn't hold up in a significance test but they're still interesting and I feel they do have a little something to say about the screen. It's interesting how the different drawing programs react so differently.

Saying no offense doesn't really give you a free pass to be outright rude.... There is no need to flame.

First, the test was debunked in other threads/forums as others have said.(google for it)

The results are so dependent on SO MANY variables that any results from such a POOR testing method are not only useless for discussion but can be dangerous because the data is so inaccurate.

You have(in no particular order)
-SPEED
-CONTACT PRESSURE
-CONTACT SURFACE AREA
-ACCELERATION
-DE-ACCELERATION
-PATH IN-ACCURACIES

etc the list goes on... anyone of these could destroy your "results"...

the ONLY way a test like this could be done with a anything with less than complete garbage for results is with a testing jig using a mechanical drive and capacitive stylus.

Is there a "doodle" app that's on Android and iPhone OS?

Excellent question; I guess I didn't mention that in my OP, but you're right that using the same app across all phones would be absolutely imperative.

If you're looking to collect data to run a stats on then you are 100% correct that what I'm asking for is completely unacceptable. However, it is my belief that if one person runs the same test on different phones they are likely to use the same motions and pressure (at least pretty close). Thus, while the results are not produced with an ideal testing method, I believe that if the tester commits to being objective, the tests will still yield some telling results.
