Can't believe that I am the only one who dislikes the Android Smiley :-(

You can't !
The only way to do it is to root your phone and change the settings that way.
Note: The people who recive your texts get the normal smilies, It's just some android based phones !

No, you're not the only one. There's just no way to do it. I miss the faces from Gingerbread. The new ones just look like green blobs.

I tried adjusting Handsent and it worked with what I am seeing however, it still sends out the ugly Android Smiles :stupido2:

the only way to prevent the recipients of your messages from seeing the android emoticons is to have them set up their phone similar to yours. well, at least the messaging app

I have gosms pro and the option for both "regular" and android smilies. I use the regular ones.

Hi! After 2+ years of living with the little green aliens (I don't hate them, they simply do not portray my expressions properly) I FINALLY figured out where the regular smileys are hiding on my keyboard. When on your regular keyboard, press and HOLD your mic button. This will give you further options: mic, clipboard, settings SMILEYS!!, etc.
It gives you many many emoji options, including animals, hearts, coffee, even an awesome dinosaur!

Yeah those are built in to the google keyboard. The old android ones were not built in. They just put the regular comma and colon, but the receiving phone would convert them.

The android smiles are only shown on your device to represent the standard smile, and the receiving android device does the same, they are not sent as little green android. The phone interpret them that way even if sent from an iPhone.
Just use google keyboard and tap the little smiley face and you will get dozens of new choices.

Besides wanting to get rid of the lame alien icons (and no they do NOT turn into "normal" smiley faces for the receiver) I wonder what other features I might be missing. Any suggestions? Can I uninstall and reinstall the keyboard somehow? I have read something about a Google keyboard, is that something I should explore?

Yeah, get the Google keyboard from the play store.
The Smiley's don't get sent, the stock Samsung keyboard interprets the key combo as an android (not alien, Android). If the recipient sees them, they must have the same keyboard.
