I know there have been thousands of threads like this. I realize I'm jumping into shark infested waters with a gunshot wound. But at least I might be able to save some people some money. I saw two instances of people paying the insurance fee just to have a 1.5 phone shipped to them. This may be a cheaper method:

I called HTC and gave a big nonsensical story to get the information I wanted. In short: HTC rep told me that their sister company would re-flash the 2.1 leaked phone back to 1.5 for a 'small fee.' I asked him what kind of small fee we were talking about, because obviously small is an opinion. He said that he couldn't quote the exact price, but that I'd have to pay shipping and it would be less than the $50 insurance rate. I've seen people having to pay 60-90 through asurion to replace their phones. I don't know why for some reason I get mine replaced for $50, but that's where the number came from. I told him that they would charge me $50 for it and he said that PCD (the sister company he mentioned before) would be cheaper overall (shipping inclusive) than the $50 fee.

I, of course, badgered the guy relentlessly about having a rom sent to me. He said that HTC had no such roms available for the 1.5, only PCD would have them but that it's highly unlikely they'd send it out, which I'm pretty sure surprises just about no one.

Anyway, I didn't get a chance to get an exact quote from PCD as I was given this information 45 minutes after their normal business hours. I was going to wait until I could contact them to confirm this myself before I posted it, but after seeing another person pay a ridiculous fee ($90) to have a 1.5 phone shipped to them, I figured I'd throw this up for anyone interested.

If anyone does want to try this - PCD is open Monday - Friday from 8AM EST until 5pm EST. Their number is 800-229-1235. Again, I can only repeat what the HTC rep told me, but he seemed to act as if it were no big deal for PCD to just do this. If no one else cares about this or bothers to try, I will post results on Monday once I contact them.

The disadvantage of the Asurion method is that Asurion only allows two replacements in any 12 month period, so if you have some bad luck in the next year and need to replace your phone, they will drop you from the plan.

Agreed, there's a drawback to both sides. If you've already filed an Asurion claim within the past 12 months, then this would probably be to your advantage. If not, I guess it'll actually depend on the price that PCD offers, which I'll post here on Monday if nobody else tries this and beats me to it.

Also, to answer another question - yes, rooting is probably the primary reason people want to get back to a 1.5 version phone.

Shouldn't have to pay whom? In the spirit of this topic, I'm assuming you mean PCD. In that case, why exactly should you not have to pay? It's not like they forced an update on anyone. If someone takes it upon themselves to install a leaked upgrade, that's not PCD or HTC's fault. It's the person who upgraded. So yes, you should have to pay to have your OWN mistake fixed, imo.

I didn't really have to give any information - most likely because I was only talking to HTC and not the company itself. The only guarantee HTC gave me is that PCD would re-flash it, nothing else. I'll let you know tomorrow what PCD asks for. My own assumption is that re-flashing it will probably wipe everything but of course I will ask them to make sure!

Yeah, with the new 2 year contract price. At my location, it's $79.99 after that. If I wanted the same phone, I'd rather pay under $50 and keep my discount for a better phone that's sure to be released within the next couple of months. (No hate for the eris, I love it, but we all know better phones are released pretty constantly.)

If you don't have a new contract, the price is significantly higher.

true, i forgot about the contract. my parents and i are on a family or business plan and they never update there phone so we have like 5-6 free upgrades or contracts which i can take.

I'm pretty jealous of that. My girlfriend is the same way, her parents haven't updated their phones in years so anytime she wants a new phone she just jacks their upgrades. I'm too impatient, so as soon as my 2 years is up (or in many cases, 1 year) I jump ship to the newest, flashiest phone.

haha yeah, i guess i'm lucky. it's just a phone at the end of the day. i think there will be a couple new phones out soon enough that will destroy the incredible.

I realize its my mistake Sherlock, I am saying you should have to pay anyone to rollback to a older OS. I came from blackberry phones where I could change OS's anytime I like , new or old. Now since this is my first HTC phone I didn't realize once I upgraded there wasnt anyway to get back. This very well could be my last HTC phone since this model was such a disappointment.

I realize its my mistake Sherlock, I am saying you should have to pay anyone to rollback to a older OS. I came from blackberry phones where I could change OS's anytime I like , new or old. Now since this is my first HTC phone I didn't realize once I upgraded there wasnt anyway to get back. This very well could be my last HTC phone since this model was such a disappointment.

Also, if you're going to "hack" your phone you should research whether or not it's reversible.

Or if you're referring to the upgrade chaos being a disappointment, you shouldn't blame HTC for your mistake or for verizon promising an update sooner than they could deliver it.

I think I've read that our part of the world (Dakotas and Montana) has a very high percentage of Android users ... in part, I suppose, because AT&T doesn't sell accounts up here.

Ok I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that. What I'm saying is why does HTC have to lock you out of the ability to downgrade? Yes I updated to a leaked 2.1 its my fault, I assumed I could test this out and play with it, then roll back like every other smartphone I've owned. But to charge you a fee to reflash imo is ******ed, when they could just release us the fix to roll back.

Why does anyone insist on defending Verizon and placing blame on customers when is well-known that they have been deceiving customers about the release date of 2.1 since the phone was released back in November. Fool me once, shame on YOU, Verizon!

Wasn't defending Verizon. Was defending HTC, if defending any. I said should not blame HTC for us deciding to update, or for verizon promising a date they couldn't stick to. He said he was disappointed with the device, and as a fellow user who's disappointed with some things (inability to roll back) I was trying to be neutral toward HTC since I think overall the phone is a good phone.
