Help Using the EVO for hotspot and a phone at the same time.

Does anyone know if the EVO can be used as a "hotspot" and also make calls at the same time? I am thinking serisously about getting rid of my cable tv, internet and phone provider if the EVO can be used this way, of course depending on how Sprint will be charging for its usage. I already pay for three phone for my wife, son and I and soon to add my daughter. So we are thinking about the EVO being a way to save a little money.

I don't know the answer to your question about simultaneous use. Just to clarify your question: Do you expect that every family member would have their own Evo and therefore be able to be responsible for their own TV, internet and phone? If not, the hotspot goes away when you leave the house with the phone in your pocket.

If it can be used as a hotspot and phone at the same time i would buy two of them, one for me and one for the wife. I will pass my Hero on to my son, and when my daughter is old enough she will get my wifes BB curve. I think by doing this i can eliminate some duplicate expenses.

I am also wondering if i buy the Sprint TV package, will the EVO stream Sprint TV through the HDMI port to my tv?! Now that would be the SHIZZZZ.

Sprint TV is my guess. Really, not having cable is incredibly freeing. Though maybe it would be less so if I actually had the time to turn on the TV. Live sports is the only thing you miss after awhile.

The Evo 4G's hotspot app can be used at the sametime as talking over the phone. The call radio and the 4G radio are two separate radios. In fact you could be on the phone while browsing the web over 4G while your kids are playing online games on their laptops, all at the sametime. I'm pretty sure Sprint will make some sort of commercial to show this off but that's why the phone comes with multiple radios.

I would probably get a "dish" or something like that. Personally i could do with out the tv. But the wife and kids feel otherwise, haha. For me i would miss it in the winter, but could just spend more time snowmobiling and in the other seasons i would probably play more golf or get another boat.

Mind you this will only work where 4G is available, again this will not work when you're on a 3G data connection, CDMA and 3G talk and surf is not possible.

To prove the point that you have all your regular services available to you when you have the Hot Spot turned on, the service rep stayed on the phone with me (my EVO) and set up the hot spot at the same time. So the answer is yes - you continue to have access to all your phone services and the Hot Spot at the same time.

Can you comment on whether you had 3G or 4G coverage at the time of this test? I'm trying to verify the previous comment. I'm in an area with limited 4G coverage, and expect to frequently travel (and need to work) in areas with 3G. I suspect I may need to break down and get a separate device for my laptop.

Also, does anybody have opinions on whether a dedicated modem works any better than using the EVO (or any other phone) as a hotspot? Another line on my plan would cost $20/mo -- a dedicated modem would cost $60/mo.

To clarify any confusion

On 3g...you will not have phone capabilities while the phone is downloading or uploading data. The data is paused while phone calls take place unless ddtm is on. In that case the internet will be prioritized and any incoming calls will go to voicemail. It works the same as if you were accessing the web on your phone

4g....two different radios ...one handling data the other handling phone so everything works.


I have put hotspot against my mother in laws ATT 3g device and had better connection/speeds. That was in the middle of nowhere.

Out of curiosity....how are you able to add a line for only $20 per month? When checking into doing that to get my son a phone it was another $60 a month. He is 9 ...I can't justify $60 lol but $20 would be easier to swallow
