Root So whats the advantage of apps2sd?

So after running apps2sd for a few days I'm not really sure why everyone is so excited about apps2sd. Maybe i'm missing something. Obviously you have more space for installed apps but I always thought I had alot of apps installed before apps2sd and never came close to running out of room on the phone. Do any of you actually have that many apps that you can't fit them all on the phone. Everyone is mentioning how much free space they have on the phone now but that free space isn't really used for anything since everything gets pushed to the sd card is it? Just wondering what I'm missing?

You are correct that the "freed" space is not used for anything; besides, it's flash (aka dreadfully slow) memory.

Here are some advantages:

(1) So long as a new ROM supports it, there's no need to download all your apps again. (This has a time-savings appeal to frequent flashers.)

(2) Possible application save and launch speed improvements if you use a class-6 SD card (or better), although I have no proof of that.

(3) More space - as you mentioned. I came across an app the other day which was about 45 Mb. If phones can handle apps like that, they will appear. Imagine GPS with locally stored maps, for instance. Think "Software grows to fill all available space.", or, if you prefer, "Build it and they will come."

(4) Nefarious reasons which I do not advocate.

cheers

Saw in another thread that partitioning the SD card shortens its life... how bad are we talking? I've never had an SD card crap out in any of my other devices - is the life shortened from 4 years to 2 years, or from 1 year to 6 months, or how drastic is it?

not too much, not enough to make a difference, that disclaimer is mostly just so that if somethig happen people wont blame me. same as the disclaimers on the roms where the dev takes no responsibility if the rom bricks their phone. its just in case :)
