android 1.6 update

Sprint customer service reps are notorious for being misinformed. Don't get me wrong, I hope they were right this time. But I don't take anything seriously from them as far as future offerings. I'd listen to HTC as far as 1.6 updates are concerned more than I would Sprint.

HTC (htc) on Twitter

Well I belive you were right i just got off the phone with HTC North America Tech Support, and he told me that the Hero will not recieve the 1.6 donut rom update ever, but instead will skip to the next available rom update some time next year. He said the hero will definitely get an update, but like I said it will not be until some time next year.

Which is more or less what I expected them to do after the announcement that Google had brought out the Eclair. Indicating that 2.0 was just around the corner. It just makes more sense to skip over 1.6 and get right to work on 2.0 Had timeframes between the release of the two been greater, I believe there would have been a 1.6 release for the Hero

And if Pdragon wouldnt have said it, I would have. Sprint reps (most of them anyways) cant be trusted as a reliable source of information for anything.

Another thing to remember is HTC has plenty of popular phones both WinMo and Android based, so the Hero probably isn't top of their priority list despite being a new device, and with HTC Sense being new its going to take time to optimize each new update to function with this, making updates available to us even later than devices without it

Only if they offer OTA updates. I don't think there's any consensus on this right now. I'm fine either way tbh, but OTA is easier.
Just as it was pointed out, the Hero isn't the only phone HTC supports so I just hope that something is released soon. I think it makes sense to roll out 1.6 with fixes for the messenger, headset, and other issues that are plaguing users.

Just some more input, being the one of the only device out with HTC Sense, I would assume that HTC plans to keep support available for the Hero for sometime. Has it is the first device for the new UI they should be focusing more closely on it for development purposes. So while we might not be the first to get the updates, I think it's safe to say we're guaranteed to get all the MAJOR updates that are planned for android and the Hero will have a long(hopefully 1+ years) lifeline of support.

But thats the thing. It really DOESNT make sense to work on 1.6 anymore. Not to say that an update wouldnt be nice, but why continue to work on something thats soon to be obsolete?

I personally, would rather they just start working on Sense for Eclair. One of the biggest differences between 1.5 and 1.6 is CDMA support. We got that already. VPN would be the only other reason I could see that anyone would truly "NEED" 1.6.

The sooner HTC gets busy working on Sense for 2.0, the sooner we can get THAT update. Thats the update that brings real change to the OS.

I'm not saying that getting 2.0 out wouldn't be priority over 1.6, but I think the first priority is taking care of the initial bugs. If they can push out a 2.0 update in the next 30-60 days then I say great go for 2.0.
HTC does take care of the bug fixes. Peep was a fine example of just such a case.

I can all but promise you wont see 2.0 in the next 30 to 60 days. Sense is most likely going to need a fair amount of retooling with all the changes to Android.

HTC can push out an update for their current apps without changing the Android rev a lot faster than they can if they go up to 1.6 or 2.0. I would expect to see app updates to fix issues, like the messaging app/sleep issue before we ever see 1.6 or 2.0. I don't know that I agree with the logic that it's easier to skip 1.6 since I would expect HTC was already working on 1.6. If that's the case I wouldn't expect them to stop work and move on to 2.0 because it wouldn't be logical. If they were already working on 1.6 I expect we'll see an update to that before the end of the year. If they weren't which doesn't make any sense since this Hero was supposed to launch with 1.6 meaning they thought they would be close, then we'll see 2.0 next. I strongly suspect they were close with 1.6 and aren't going to walk away from that. I don't trust reps from any company to give accurate information about development, release cycles, or street dates.

With all said you all have peep yesterday I believe on peep they stated an update would not be soon...I hope to get right to 2.0..verizon will have next month....pray we do to
*IF* the Moto Droid ships with 2.0, its going to be stock android. Has Google even turned 2.0 loose yet? I dont believe they have. They could be waiting for the Droid to launch to do so. Honestly I dont know. Either way, I suspect its going to take some time to integrate Sense into 2.0. I wouldnt expect to see that happen until sometime next year.

If they can roll out patches, great. I'm doing fine so far though to be honest. I avoid the Messaging app and doing text much anyway. Really the biggest annoyance for me is the clock issue. I'd like to use some of their clocks, but they display the wrong time :(

I will say that I'm keeping an eye on Verizon's Droid offerings. Should be interesting.

There are work arounds for the clock widgets. Have you tried any of them?

For instance, the Large anolog clock with weather gives you the option of which city you want. I would suggest using a larger city in your area with the "add city" option at the top.

If that doesnt work (and I suspect it would), you could use the Duel clock, and set your "home" city in much the same fashion as above. Tap the clock, menu, home settings. Select your home city, or a city close to you. You'll always have the correct time on that clock while the other may change based on the time, area and data from towers.

2.0 is rumored to be on the droid....but this is rumor.....I was wrong to refer as if fact....My "Opinion" is that Htc will follow suit if Droiddoes so shall htc....But I am not that well versed with Sense so my hopes and dreams my be crushed.....

eclair seems *so* different than cupcake!

adding different ways of doing things (layers in google maps for example) - and adding new features outright (that "car mode" where you just select w/ you thumb and then its voice control from there) that yeah.. the SenseUI is going to have to have a major revision/overhaul in order to accommodate all the newy goodness!
