No nonsense ROM - Least amount of "work"?

Ok, so after all of the frustration over the entire 2.1 debacle (even though "technically" Sprint has 1 more week to produce 2.1 before blowing their updated timeline of Early Q2), I am considering Rooting/ROMing my phone. I've been on the fence before, but I'm back on it again.

The only problem I'm seeing after doing a bunch of reading is this:

There doesn't appear to be a ROM that is fully functional without "workarounds" or patches. Everything I've read, unless I am not understanding it correctly, which is possible, states that in order for "A" to work, you have to install "B" which you can download here, but you have to patch the download with the file from this site and change this line of code in the adb shell.....then you have to check every 20 minutes to make sure that the file hasn't updated.....etc.

I think you know what I mean....it may not be that extreme, but it does seem like there is quite a bit of work involved in getting the simplest of functions to work depending on which ROM you choose.

The question I have is this, is there a ROM that has the functions of 2.1 that I could root the phone (preferably using an automatic method), install the ROM and be completely done with it? After the ROM install, everything works and there are no other mods that need to be made?

I do appreciate all of the things that the technically inclined can do with the different ROMs, but I just don't have the time to put forth.

I guess what I'm asking is if the official Sprint 2.1 were released right now, I would flash the RUU, unplug the phone and walk away. Everything is golden and there is nothing additional required to get stuff to work. Is there a current ROM out there like this? I've read a bit about DC2.08.1 and Fresh 2.0d, but both seem to have their issues.

For instance, the DC thread at XDA states "there's 225 pages in this thread, if something doesn't work, search for it and you'll find it". That's the thing, I unfortunately don't have time to search for and fix things, which is why I'm posing the question.

Well unlike 1.5 which is final and the Kernel Source was released, 2.1 is still under construction itself. There will be minor fixes to it until it is final and HTC releases the kernel source. That said, There are several complete 99.9% functional ROMS. Konikub's Aloyicious is great. Darchstar has built a 100% functional (except the camera) Version that relies heavily on Cyanogen's sources. Last night Toastcfh managed to get the camera and trackball functional with OVERCLOCK and other kernel optimizations.

Fresh 2.0d is probably the most "stock like" complete bug free rom out there right now, but again since 2.1 isn't final, it isn't as simple as install it and go to get it that way, but it's damn close.

I know what you mean about being on the fence about rooting, but only because I was afraid I would brick my phone. A couple of people I know in real life had told me to not do it unless I knew what I was doing. So I was a bit intimidated too. But with the help of the forum and a few people that helped walk me through my errors, rooting was a piece of cake. Now I don't see what the big deal was about my friends warning me, because it was easy. Didn't brick my phone either. I'm not sure you can if you follow the guide and read it several times, then take your time so you don't make a mistake.

After getting tired of waiting for Sprint, I now have a phone I really love again! It is faster, quicker, and I can use apps that I couldn't before. I was down to just liking my phone before rooting, now I really love it again.

As for rooting, I suggest the manual method. It will save you time. Reason being, the auto method might work, but you won't know what is going on or the steps. Plus, it doesn't work for some people, and I was one of them. After two tries and attempting to figure out if I had done something wrong or if it was the program, I went to the manual method. If you can copy and paste, you can do the manual method and save time and frustration.

As for ROMs, I have only run one, the Fresh 2.0d ROM and I am very happy with it. I have not had to add any patches or anything like that. It has worked great right out of the box, so to speak. There is a issue that seems to be isolated to me with using my camera. The camera works great but when I press the "Back" button or the "Home" button to close the camera app, the screen freezes. I have to reboot at that point.

But I consider what a slow experience my phone was, how limited, and how much I wanted 2.1 before rooting, and with all of the performance enhancements and other bonuses of running a 2.1 based ROM, the quirk with backing out of the camera app isn't that big of a deal anymore. Everything else works just like it should and I have no complaints at all.

If you want to really enjoy your phone, then rooting is for you. Waiting for the official Sprint 2.1 update may take away the ability to root, so I won't be wishing I had waited. I am glad I rooted and can run different ROMs if I want to try something different. Plus, after the Sprint 2.1 update comes out the developers will be able to go in and add enhancements to make their ROMs even better than the Sprint 2.1 update.

While the ripping off part is arguable (it is an open source os after all), I will have to disagree with you. I used the DC rom for a week and it had some issues that I could not live with. Namely the proximity sensor not working correctly. No issues the with fresh rom after two days. Now I will say the updater in the dc rom is truly cool.

No matter what which ever rom you go for the speed pick-up is quite nice. Also I second the manual root as well. If you can read it is very simple and helps you to get to know how the phone works for future use. Root and don't look back.

I'll start reading the ROOTING FAQ which links something, then I go to look at Fresh's page which links to XDA, after 20 minutes, my head hurts.

I'd like to do this as easily as possible, which would be using the Kitchen. My reasons for this are because it's simpler, I can easily add/delete apps as I choose without opening the adb shell-thingy and I can wrap my head around it.

The other thing I can't figure out is this:

If I root using the kitchen, I'm then rooted and nothing else. I then have to connect my phone to the computer and copy the Fresh 2.0d zip to the sd card and follow those directions to get that ROM on the phone. Once that is completed, I'm done, correct? If I read correctly, the kitchen can create a Nandroid backup for you, right? That way, I can make a backup right after rooting (to go back to the state my phone is in right now, with the exception that it would be rooted) and also make a backup right after I flash Fresh 2.0d, correct?

Also, since this is only BASED off the 2.1 leak, it doesn't contain that hboot thing that will prevent upgrading to the actual 2.1 once released, right? That would only require flashing the Stock RUU and then updating to the official update, yes?

This is why I'm not sure this is somethign I want to delve into. WAAAAYYYYY too many questions

Yea I'm with you guys, I started to root and downloaded some stuff but with all the jumping around from site to site and so many different things to download/update...I just gave up.

I would eventually like to root since sprint can't get their act together, but I don't think I will be happy at all with certain things like the camera not working.

Anyway back on subject, I have never rooted but I have tried to read up on it as much as my head can take, and, I don't think there is a way to do it without having to download a few things and get a few fixes/workarounds... and even then, some things are prolly not gonna work.

Either you do or you don't. Do it and you'll be happy you did. Don't and you'll wonder what did you miss? If you want 2.1 now, root. there are enough people around to help if you get in a pinch... Just read the link in the post above and that will be all you need. any fixes you may need are a question away... we can help...

I was skeptical too about rooting and flashing my Hero. But after having Fresh 2.0d for probably 3 weeks now I would have to say I fell in love w/ my phone all over again. I manually rooted and once u READ you'll be fine. But I've had very few probs with the ROMs, I don't have any issues w/ the camera app either. All I'm basically saying is that w/ the F 2.0d Rom I didn't have to add any extra.. everything that I needed was there.

there is NO proximity sensor in the Sprint Hero

Correct. There are four sensors: Accelerometer, magnetic field sensor, orientation sensor and light sensor.

right... which is why I was pointing out to Amjo that his problem with DC not having a working Proximity sensor wasn't a problem with the ROM.. it's with the lack of a sensor in the phone itself.. no ROM will correct that one...
