i am *literally* getting emails on my hero BEFORE i see them in gmail

I wonder if the Pre did the same.
While I can't vouch for the Pre which was out before the Hero, I do now that there is a slight lag in windows gmail while getting new messages. I know this because at work I have my laptop connected to my 3g/4g modem to circumvent the websense proxy on my work pc. I send an email with or without an attachment to myself from my laptop and on my pc, it takes quite a few seconds for it to appear in my gmail window. But on my Hero its there already.

Hows the battery drain with Auto-sync on? is it noticeable?

uhm.. yeah, i guess

but i knew that going into it - i've got a car charger (cig lighter-to-USB - nice - thx tats!) for it and extra USB cable and i've always got it on a leash so to speak... so i'm good - works for me

but your answer kinda catches me a little by surprise - do you mean to say you're NOT always synced up??

Well coming from WinMo, a Diamond actually, I figured it would kill the battery so i turned all auto syncs off. I spend my day in my office in front of my computer so the bulk of my email arent received on my cellular. Then after i leave the office i periodically sync it manually. Just like i did on my Diamond.

Yes, that why i asked if the battery drain was noticeable. I already decided htough that this week im going to run with sync on, and see how it performs. I silence my phone, so getting the notif's on there wont be an issue. I'll report back with my finding.

that's why I got the seidio extended battery for my G1. Best 60 bucks I spent on a phone accessory. It lasts over 2 days if I'm conservative. Since I don't have to be, I'm not, and it still lasts over a day on one charge, with listening to Pandora for two hours on a bluetooth stereo headset, having auto-sync on. So great. Hopefully they can do something for the hero. It's so nice not having to carry a charger with me anymore.

My friend is an advocate for the Hero, so he has a Pre and a Hero. The Pre consistently gets emails before the Hero, but both get it before gmail.com can refresh and receive the email. The Pre uses IMAP-idle to receive emails via push. I don't know what Android uses, but it has been pushing emails from gmail since before gmail implimented IMAP-idle, so that's probably why (some other technology). :)

I sometimes get emails faster on Hero but there have been other times that it's slower. I didn't do any special setup and that's how it is. Lucky for me using email on my phone is almost never time sensitive. If works wants me getting email on my phone they can pay for it...which means I'd end up with a Blackberry from Verizon.
