What has the stock app got to do with sms texting apps?XD

I think he's referring to the fact that the standard messaging service/application that comes standard with the HTC Hero is draining the battery in many Sprint HTC Hero users. Changing the default messaging client to be a 3rd party SMS app (like Hand Cent) is one work-around for the battery drain until HTC issues a fix for the problem.

I really like Hand Cent, and if it weren't for the battery issue, I would have never known about it. It's got great customizability, including changing the way the text messages are displayed (I changed mine to be the iPhone's bubble style), as well as customizing notifications for vibration, sounds, and LED indicator. I also like the quick response option, which is very handy. The "SPEAK TEXT" option is also pretty nice. Novel, but cool none the less.

Twidroid - much better twitter app than the built in one, IMO.
Taskpanel X - good free task manager
aTrackDog - checks for updates for your installed apps
Wifi Analyzer
GPS status
Hungry! - nice little shopping list app
Google Voice search
Google sky map
Copilot Live - great satnav software, costs money though

- AK Notepad (for simple notes)
- Astrid (ToDo list ... co-operates with Calendar in so far as a Task can be automatically added to Calendar, however this doesn't seem to be picked up when Calendar is sync'd with Google Calendar on-line)
- Astro File Manager (which I find useful in particular for displaying html files stored on the SD card ... I haven't found any other way to display these.)
- beebPlayer (works very well)
- FBReader (for reading e-Books, which can easily be created on a PC with Calibre)
- TasKiller
- Toggle Settings

+1. I also can't stand the pop ups for voicemails. It's fine for texts, but annoying for voicemails.
this is a nice app but i wish it wasn't so laggy

And coming from PalmOS, I'm quite annoyed that I don't have an option to sync notes/memos. The whole watered down PIM thing is a bit of a pain. WebOS did the same thing. Dumb it down to work with google and make syncing to other PIMS like Outlook an extreme afterthought. Even HTC Sync is a joke and causes more headaches than it's worth.

AppManager Cyrket - AppManager is one of my favourites - enables you to create great homescreen folders with graphics/icons that are up to the sensui standard. I've found that this has really decluttered my homescreens.

Are you talking about the right app? I thought AppManager was for uninstalling/installing/backing up apps to the SD Card.

CoPilot Live - costs $, but a great app for sat nav.
BeebPlayer - for watching BBC programs via iPlayer
NewsRob - for following your RSS feeds
Wapedia - neat application for accessing Wikipedia
Twidroid - a superior Android Twitter client (better than Peep)
ChompSMS - I prefer it for SMS messages than the standard Hero app
JewelLust
- Addictive puzzle game
Lexic - Simple word game
WikiTune - streaming music/radio stations with automatic onscreen lyrics if you want to sing along!
Spotify - costs $ but gives you online *and* offline access to a wide selection of music. (And it's much better on Android than iPhone ;) )
Advanced Task Killer - Others have mentioned this too - helps ensure that your Hero doesn't get bogged down running dozens of apps, by exiting the ones you're not using.

don't forget about I Music: nice little app that allows you to download mp3's straight to your phone (like a Limewire for your droid)
Mabilo: Great variety of ringtones, the ring tones you want like the old Zelda theme, etc
The Weather Channel: i like it for weather, gives you a nice radar in the options, that animate (if you love weather like I do)
and I don't know if anyone mentioned it but
ShazamGreat for tagging songs by listening to them and then putting a name and artist to the song they play on the radio that you can't figure out who sings it....
