battery vs apps

A couple is questions:
1. I've installed Advanced Task Killer and I use it fairly regularly, but I don't understand why I keep finding apps I'm not using popping up when I check it. For example: when I finish online I turn off 3g or WiFi and use task killer to turn off internet. But I also find half a dozen other apps running, things like Clock, Messages, Last FM, etc. Can I stop that from happening?

2. I keep hearing that the display really eats battery life, but when I check Battery Usage in 'About phone' the things that between them account for about 90% is battery use are 'Phone idle', 'Cell standby' and 'Android system'. Display has used around 7%. Does that sound right?

1. You don't really need a task killer. Those background processes aren't using any battery life (and if they are it would be an unnoticeable amount). Android suspends programs that aren't in use and eventually closes them itself.

I stopped using a task killer and haven't noticed any change to battery life.

2. Yeah that's about right. If you had display on the highest settings, it would probably use twice that amount. Android/Phone Idle/Cell Standby are the highest on mine too.

I think they're too high, frankly. I'm hoping that the performance improvements in Android 2.2 will bring these down a little. I don't understand why cell standby should be using 30% of my battery life.

its the way the apps were developed. If the developer wants hteir app to be running a service for what ever reason it will do that.

Now you need to remember that an app being shown in task killer doesn't exactly mean its running, in fact there are multiple definitions of the term "running" within android.

For example one definition may be a service being idle in memory, doing a task every hour. You weouldnt want to kill it because the idle task is not bothering anyone.

Task killers are advanced tools and are dangerous if used without knowledge.

That's unhelpful thanks. I installed a few different task killers to compare, and they all showed different things! One keeps showing Stocks, Footprint and Friendfeed repeatedly reappearing despite sync off and all 3 apps told to not auto-run. When I kill 1 (any 1) it kills all 3.
