How to back up my phone?

Just make sure all your contacts are Google Contacts, that is all. They will automatically be backed up by being linked to your Google account. When you receive and install the OTA, simply log in with your Google account info and all your contacts will be there.

For apps, after you log in after updating, just go to the Market and check out My Downloads. It will list all apps that you had downloaded. Start downloading all the apps.

That's a lot of trouble. Why can't we just back it up like the BB's do.

Contacts, apps, settings, the whole thing. And it's free. Comes with the phone.

The HTC sync only works about 50% of the time and I don't like using GOOGLE contacts.

I don't think there is anything available like that. I think Android was designed to be as independent from a desktop as possible. You would probably have a good market for it if could develop something.

Is it necessary to download Astro or Mybackup for back ups?

I believe if you're certain your contacts are "Google" contacts, it wouldn't be necessary...your contacts would be safe. Astro is handy for backing up applications, but you can always go back to the market and look at 'My Downloads" to reinstall applications you've downloaded. I backed up my entire card to my PC each time before I installed a leak as well.

If a contact is not a "google" contact, then how do I make it a google contact. Is there no other way to back up contacts other then google contacts? I couldn't find a way to change my non-google contacts on my phone. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It seems many people have made the choice by mistake. I believe you would have to delete, then recreate each contact, my opinion is that it's always best to make them "Google" contacts You can see details of your contact types if you navigate to "People", then "Menu", then "View".
