I have read many articles as there are case laws on rooting my Droid. I am running 2.1 operating system. I have been trying for 3 days, and I am giving up. Here is what I did.

1) Downloaded the file that will root my Droid.

2) I am running windows 7 on my computer, but I did rename the file to update.zip

3) Plugged in my Droid to my computer and mounted it.

4) Moved the program from my computer onto my card.

5) Unmounted my Droid and shut it off.

6) Started my droid holding down the X key.

7) In the safe mode I click on unzip, and then I get it was unsuccessful.

Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

You can't root 2.1. There are two solutions.

1. Revert to 2.01 and then root with Droidmod and then install a rooted 2.1 rom.

2. Install SPR recovery.

a. Download a rooted 2.1 rom and rename it to update.zip.
b. Move that file to the /sdcard folder.
c. Boot into spr recovery by holding down "x" and power.
d. Select "install."
e. Select "allow update.zip installation." then select install /sdcard/update.zip
