First Android - Moving From Nokia after 13 years - Tips on setting up phone?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I've been a HUGE Nokia fan for 13 years, but after my past couple of handsets (E71, E72) I've been quite disappointed, and after discussing with a few knowledgeable people, decided to move to Android and the HTC Desire...

My new phone will be arriving tomorrow...

I make the most of my mobiles, so like to use all features, so wondered whether anyone could give me a few tips on what to do when I first boot it up - before I start using it...

I've read a bit about rooting, and think I need to do that, but is there anything else I should be doing?

I've got an 16GB Micro SD card I've been using with the Nokia.

Any / all advice would be gratefully received!

By no means am I being sarcastic, but set it up exactly how you want it... That's one of the things that makes android so great

Be prepared to do a few factory resets before you get it set just how you want it. I have had my Desire 2 weeks and I've now done my fourth reset. I'm now reasonably happy and can probably input all the necessary data without getting it wrong!!

You can't break it so enjoy the experience.

I've read something about making your memory card a goldcard or something - but not read what that involves or what it gains...?

I would try your phone without rooting first. I don't know exactly what rooting does, but I'm happy with my Desire without rooting.

There is no value to it, i don't understand why you have to reset it 4 times. You don't have to reset it at all. If you think you do then you need to come here and ask us to help before you do

Inexperience was the inital reason. I set up my main email account incorrectly. Now I know how to edit the settings. Another was when I changed my google mail account to gmail.com and market place stopped working. IMHO reset is an easy way to learn the basics. I'm now much happier and, of course, I now know about this forum

Nope. You hit next, next, enter your gmail credentials, press sign in. Done. Nothing tricky or difficult.

lol fair enough... sounds easy enough, I'm far from a novice it-wise, but just completely new to Android & HTC... I know Nokias inside out lol, so it'll be a good learning curve

First do a backup of your contacts with Nokia PC Suite and than start a syncronization with Microsoft Outlook (using PC Suite too). I advice to do 2 types of backup becase after sync with Outlook if you are not setting corect PC Suite you contacts from Nokia phone might be lost. In this case you could do a Restore from previous backup.

After you see contacts in Outlook you download HTC Sync from HTC Website and do a sync with your new HTC Desire.

Thanks for that... I've got all my contacts synced with Gmail, so have been told that's the easiest way of getting them on the new phone...

I've never been impressed with syncing Nokias with Outlook, so never bothered with it lol...

Needless to say I've got multiple backups of my Nokia & contacts, just in case lol

I have been with nokia for many years also, and feel that Nokia seem to have gone off the boil a little as far as phone development. They don't seem to know which direction to take there handsets, and if they don't work it out soon I think too many people will move.

My last handset was the N97, and it was missing key features which the desire offers. While i don't think anything currently anything beats the Nokia Maps service (google is way short at the moment), I feel in general the desire is far far better.

Okay, well I've set up the phone now, and seem to have 2 mail accounts - the default Mail on the desktop, and the Gmail in the menu - I can't see a way of deleting the Mail so I can just use the Gmail...

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Click and hold on Mail, then drag it down to the bottom of the screen to where it says 'Remove'... That gets rid of that...

Then...

Bring up all your programs, scroll to Gmail, press and hold it, it will then allow you to place it on your desktop where you like...

Sorted...

One thing I would recommend is 'Gmail Unread Count' from the market, its a widget that shows the number of unread messages on the desktop icon...

I've already figured out the desktop icons, but don't really want the same account checking in two different apps...

I dumped Nokia afer the Mrs got an Android phone. That week ditched my N96 for an interim Hero, and now the Desire. The only time anything else has tempted me away.

Like you been with Nokia continuously for some 14 years for my personal phone. So glad I did, much better user experience and app store.

Rather than shun Andoid, Nokia really should embrace it before they loose any more of their customer base to Android! I know it they made an Android phone, even if the exact same spec and price as the Desire, I'd have a Nokia as the quality (for me) has always been spot on. NEVER had any warranty fails with the hardware.

Hopefully we'll get a better HTC PC app, but only Samsung (and then only on 2.1 Eclair) provide anything like Nokia Suite.

It's more like Nokia suite v1 (or 0.whatever it was) if you remember that; as I do Rich?

That's going back a bit! But yes, I do remember it... to be honest I never really bothered with the PC suite apart from the backups & connecting my laptop/pc to the internet, other than that it was just a nuisance lol... But then I know what I'm doing with them, so I can see the value of the PC suite for novices and people that just like simple options lol

The only thing I'm disappointed with now really is Virgin - the reception in my flat is extremely poor! I wish more networks did the broadband box things like Vodafone do...

I'm exactly like you. I'm 23 and have been nokia since age of about 12 or 13 and this is my first non nokia.

you will actually find some features missing from the desire that are on nokias, but overall, android is vastly superior to symbian or anything else nokia run.

In fairness, if Nokia ever adopted android, (as i said in another thread), i would be in heaven!

The only problem I'm having so far is with the WiFi - can't really use it :s

It is working though as it works with my Nokia E72 and Netbook...

If I disable the wifi and let it connect through the mobile internet, it's slow, but works...

I'm sure the wifi was working yesterday, so not sure what's going on...

Rich, try an app called Wifi analyzer. Odds on that your router is on a channel shared by several others.
