Bought a used android. Scam gone wrong ?

Hi everybody, maybe somebody with experience in buying used phones can help me. The situation : I find a moto g for sale on my local craigslist. I contact the guy by text because he's unable to speak by phone. He lives far from me so I ask if we can meet halfway. He agrees (all by text). I meet the guy with one of my relatives, the phone is good, great price, done deal. Now the weird part : once home, the relative who was with me gets a phone call from a guy (who has a different voice than the guy I met) who asks where I am as he's arrived to the meeting point half way from my home... I though it was some kind of a scam so I pretended I dont know anything and said its wrong number. He gets pissed and hangs up. So the deal is : How the hell did that guy got my relatives phone number because I've dealt with the seller with my own phone and my relatives phone number was never mentioned ? Did the seller have some kind of wireless hacking device to get my relatives phone number while we were making the transaction ? Also what's the point here ? How come there is 2 guys wanting to meet me ?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I have heard of that happening with my daughter, she is very savvy and protects herself by always meeting in a very public place.

She had this happen a couple of times, and the meets were always set up on Facebook, and the phone number always by PM.... but, FB and CL are not perfect, sometimes when you send a message via either one of them, it gets delivered to the wrong party.

1- Never buy a used electronic devise because you will pay in repairing it more thane you will pay for a new phone.
2 - Never make an appointment by text, because the one texting you cane be a South Asian youth pretending to be an american, and it can be a girl that pretending to be a man or any other person that don't want you to see his real face because simply is a scammer, and the proof if this when they sent you an other man.

Having your relatives number is weird too. In my opinion that was a scam, be careful next time.

I've gotten a lot of phones from Swappa and one from Craigslist. No issue with any of them. Only 1 of the 6 phones on my family plan is new, the rest are all used.

I met the guy from Craigslist at a Verizon store to be sure the phone was OK (and for safety!). I sold a phone through Craigslist and met that guy at a McDonalds (with my sister, for safety). You do have to be careful but you can get a good buy too.

Exactly, i think its better to check the phone in person than to buy it off ebay and get scammed with a dummy phone. But the thing I don't get in my situation is how the "scammer" got my relatives phone number and what was he trying to pull ?

We first texted then I called him to set up the meeting. The guy I called was the same I met ( same voice) . The bizarre thing is why is there someone else calling my relative ? Its pretty weird. I also heard people can put tracking software on a rooted android that can't be deleted even after a factory reset. Do you know how do I check if my phone is rooted without going through the play store ?

Thanks for the response.

Interesting to say the least. I have sold and bought devices on Craigslist and Ebay. The safer of the two being Ebay at least for me. Where i live Craigslist is iffy so i carry my 40 caliber Glock. In fact Craigslist has become so iffy here that the Police dept allows you to make sales, trades etc. In the police dept lobby.

I only go to Craigslist for hitmen and hookers. Buy and sell a phone from a reliable party that will honor refunds like Amazon or Ebay. I have sold my old cell phones on Amazon and have never had a complaint.
Amazon is better than e-bay now. PayPal won't get involved in issues any longer.

When buying a phone, make sure to wipe the living heck out of it in case the person you bought it from had some unsavory history that can have someone knockin' at your door. When SELLING a device, do the same thing as, just like with puters, it's never really gone until you triple gutman it (3 x 64 passes) and even then, who knows.

The very second one looks at that text, every single iota of info is the sender's... not just IN the device but the person can turn the camera, voice recorder, listen to calls... basically take complete control of your device and you will NEVER EVER know it as the little lights indicating record, etc., do NOT get activated when this occurs.

I hope this person changed all info at their bank/credit cards/etc., accounts. Selling a phone and not making a nickle on it is a good deal if you can start wiping someone's accounts out.
