Help Reinstall Galaxy s4 (SGH-M919) firmware via Samsung Kies

Yesterday I did a complete factory reset on my phone. Now I cannot do anything with my phone except boot into recovery mode. If not in recovery, my phone stays on the Galaxy s4 logo. I read that I could reinstall the firmware (I believe I wiped the system), but my phone will not completely connect to my laptop via usb. A noise indicates that my phone is connected, but Samsung Kies eventually says that a connection could not be made. How can I solve this issue? Thank you.

If you want to use Kies to reflash your phone.
Click on Tools in top bar.
Select Software Update and Initialization.
Fill in phone model and SN when prompted. On sticker under battery.
Connect phone to pc in download mode. Volume down+home + power, then volume up.
I did this, but there never was a solid connection. A little pop up told me that a connection could not be made.
