Help red x while plugged in

I had the same problem until I tried one method by accident.

  1. Connect the tab with the relevant port.
  2. Now slowly connect the USB side of the connector to the USB port in your computer (remember to be slow enough till 50 percent of the connector is pushed in).
  3. Your tablet will now start charging normally using the PC.
  4. Now you can push in the remaining half of the connector into the slot

ok people.. the red X does not mean anything other than the power supply detected is not supplying the correct voltage therefore the current usage for charging will be limited to less than 1/2 amps or 500 miliamps. Thats all it means. If the correct voltage is detected then the red X will not appear and the tablet will comsume all current that the supply has to offer up to a maximum limit of 3 amps. If you unplug the tablet from the pc or the charger and the red X was present, the red X will go away because no chargers are being detected.

That being said this part is very important if the red X is driving you nuts.

The red X will only appear if the charging voltage is less than 5.3v.

All computers USB ports are regulated at 5.0V. So you will always get the red X if you plug into a computer.

If you plug into a wall adapter that supplies 5.3v then the red X will go away. BUT remember that the time it takes to charge up will depend upon the amount of current the charger can supply. The Higher the current rating of the charger the faster the tablet will charge.

The first value we need to be concerned with is the voltage. Will the supply trigger normal charging? Yes if 5.3v

The second value we need to be concerned with is the current rating. How fast can we charge? 2A (2000mA) or more is best.

Samsung chargers are now mostly 5.3v. but there are others out there that are 5.3 as well. You do not have to have a samsung model. If you have a samsung model and you get a red X then the charger is faulty. Get a different one with a 5.3v rating.

Google 5.3v, 2A USB charger. All of them will work.

Some chargers are not regulated. This means that you can buy 3 of the same model and only one will work and 2 will not. Why? because 2 can supply 5.1v while one supplies 5.4v. 5.3v is the magic number.. remember?

Make sure the charger is regulated for 5.3 or above. 5.4, 5.5 is ok.

This is samsungs way of preventing a possible fire. They reason that if 5.3v is available then consuming more than 1/2A is ok and if not then limit to 1/2A.


For those with a dead tablet and can't get it to charge can correct the problem by plugging in the charger and waiting for 10 seconds and then unplugging. Repeat this 20 to 30 times. The tablet will then begin to charge properly. Why does this work? Because when you first plug in the charger the tablet will charge at the maximum current of the charger for about 10 seconds until it detects that the charger is less than the required voltage and begins limiting the current. This is how you can briefly trick the tablet into charging without protection.

I hope this helps those who are being misled by being told to press button combinations and doing other weird stuff that obviously doesn't work.

One other note.
If you see that there was a red x and now there isn't, consider where you plugged in your charger. If you plugged into a circuit that runs an appliance like a refrigerator then when the appliance turns on the wall voltage will drop. If the charger is unregulated it can be enough of a drop to cause the charger to go below 5.3v which in turn will cause the red X to appear. When the wall voltage returns to normal then the red x will go away because the charger voltage returns to 5.3 or above.

The red X only means that you're not consuming battery because the device is taking power from the USB port. As soon as you disconnect the USB cable the red X go away and the battery stars to work.
Some devices (specially tabs) hardly recommend to charge the battery using the charger and NOT the USB connection.

It's an amperage issue. A PC's USB port supplies less than 1 amp, while the wall charger supplies 2.1 amps.

Same here, idk why. I am using the charger that came with the Samsung Device

So are you using the USB/PC or wall adapter to charge?
