Help Why wont my PS4 controller pair to my Samsung S6 Edge Plus?

Ok, so I have recently purchased a Samsung S6 edge plus, along with the Gear VR, for all that VR fun!

Only problem is, a lot of the VR stuff requires a controller to work with, and I am having an absolute NIGHTMARE trying to get something working.

I have read loads that you can use PS4 controllers, all be it you may need to download an app to help the lag, but I simply can't get mine to pair properly with my phone.

I've even bought a Micro USB OTG cable to connect it via cable, and still it doesn't seem to work. I cabled it up, pressed the button and it just turned my PS4 on as normal and nothing on my phone at all.

I have tried so many times to pair them but it just wont have it. Occasionally I can put the controller into Pairing mode, stop and start bluetooth on my phone, and then it will say paired on the phone, but the controller still flashes like it is waiting to pair, and it has no control on the phone. I get a pop up on the phone to add as a trusted device also, but if I click it then it just says that it is unable to communicate with the controller.

Driving me mad, I just want to use the controller to enjoy my VR!

I also have an old Moga pocket controller, but of course that is the Moga that doesn't work with VR, you know, because it would be and all that!

Can anyone please help, I have tried so many times, and looked at loads of videos etc, I just can't work out what is going wrong and what is getting in the way and stopping it working.

Yeah it needs to be PS4 controller, I don't have any PS3 controllers anymore, PS3 long since gone from this household. Lol.

Every where I've seen suggests it's as simple as set controller to pairing mode, then select it on phone. Just doesn't work.

Tried resetting the controller and everything, but even then as soon as I turn it on it turns PS4 on, so seems like the controller has become hardcoded to PS4 and nothing else! :(

I haven't, mostly because I don't want to have to root my phone just to use the controller. If that ends up the only choice then I can look at it.

If I need to root my phone though then that's a whole new trail of finding out what I need to do and so on and so forth! I haven't rooted a phone I don't think since my iPhone 3! :-s

HTC phones also use to support PS3 controllers without needing additional apps, or for the need of rooting. However, since Sony's smartphones started becoming popular, one of their selling points, was remote play. After doing some research, I am assuming, that Sony is not allowing other manufactures to use their controller drivers.

My HTC One m9+ supreme camera edition, supports full otg. However, no matter what I did, my PS3 controller would not work. I'll get a blinking light, or all four lights blinking. My HTC would also read the connection, but nothing would happen.

I even tried an app, that tells you if your phone can use Sony controllers. After, the app told me I couldn't, I emailed the app developer, who stated, my phone is missing the controller drivers. He said, my only option is to have HTC install the drivers through an update (that won't happen).

So, I bought a really good ipega controller. It works on all my emulators, google play store games, it even controls my phone's desktop, works for ios and PC.

The app is called sixaxis compatibility checker. Is it made by the same sixaxis folks. The developer himself, even states, that the PS3/PS4 controller drivers are excluded from current smart phones. Who knows, you may be in luck.

Yeah, It's annoying, as it seems others have been able to pair PS4 controllers to S6's etc, but it wont work for me on my edge+, however I have since found someone else mentioning similar and suggesting that the new flagship range seems to be having issues with these. So not sure if Samsung have changed something.

Very frustrating though. I did consider buying a Moga Pro or something, but they are not cheap, and actually I only have a single controller for PS4 and could do with another one, so was hoping that I might be able to kill 2 birds with one stone. Alas that seems less and less likely to be the case. :'(

Try the sixaxis compatibility checker

It will tell you if you phone can use Sony's controllers. It's free, and made by the same sixaxis folks.

Samsung phones come with a lot of bloatware, therefore, there phones are highly rooted. Try the sixaxis compatibility checker, and put it to rest. The app explains it, or tell me what it says, and I'll tell you if it works or not.

This is the controller that I bought. It is currently on sale for 17.99, I bought it on sale during the holidays for 9.99. Best purchase I ever made.

Nope, doesn't seem to want to work unless it's rooted.

I have connected the controller via OTG cable, but when I hit start it just says something along the line of attempting connection 1, Driver starting, Could not start driver, check your phone is rooted!

So no go unless I root it would seem! :(
1. Try KingRoot and pingpong Root.. Those are your best bets at this moment for possibility of Rooting. Just be sure to do some reading so you make sure you've got as many bases covered as possible to avoid potential issues caused doing anything that may be inadvertently related to exploring your new privileges. But if your only purpose in Root is to activate the PS3-4 capabilities then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. This is a forum so your Best friend will be to read-read-read. We can never stress that enough here because by read you can learn from other's mistakes and have an enjoyable experience. [emoji41]

2. I'm usually a highly sarcastic sm@rt@$$ and haven't been condescending towards you but I can certainly do so.. And then you won't like me at all, if you wanna go that route. [emoji48] But that's not really my intention at this time so plz don't make me change it..? I'm actually trying to help and the only way you'll get anything accomplished from the information derived from this place is to try the suggestions and report back with your findings (so we can advise where to take the next step) instead of getting upset. It took a few more posts but you finally tried what was suggested and now my next move was pointing towards Root info to achieve your desired results. The way in which you are talking to me itself, is, in my opinion condescending.

I have indeed read a lot of stuff with regards to this, but I was unable to find the information I wanted, hence I asked here. I had already seen about the Sixaxis application, but everything I had seen about it referred to PS3 controllers, and not PS4, then you yourself mentioned you have used it with PS3 controllers, and made no mention that it may have been workable with PS4 controllers also, so I mentioned I needed something to work with PS4 controllers.

I wasn't not trying to ignore what you had posted, it simply from everything I had read was for PS3 and so not useful to me.

So your presumption then that I had not used it because, in your own words I had apprently thought "oh Nooo.. Not good enough..!!" was quite honestly rude and condescending. Again in my opinion.

The fact you keep saying things with capitalised and quoted words and sentences just comes across that way, whether intended or not, I don't know, but that is how it reads from my side of the screen, so I will let you know that's how it reads. How you react to that, which is apparently to do more of the same thing is up to you.

I have started to read about the rooting already and looking at the KNOX stuff, but still in the infancy so haven't read too deply into it just now, as I would prefer if possible to avoid rooting it just to be able to connect a controller. I will see how it goes though and where I end up.

"Thanks for YOUR help" :)

Anytime. I have also come to the understanding that both KingRoot (apk version) and pingpong Root are safe enough to use without tripping Knox. It's certainly worth a try tho. The cheaper route is looking like Root will be your best option while the more expensive but non Root option is that mobi controller.

Yeah, looking that way. I'm not even convinved that controller will work either now from some stuff that I have read elsewhere.

Seems something has been made different in the Edge Plus within the Bluetooth setup and it doesn't seem to play well with controllers of varying sorts. Reading very hit and miss mixed reviews. :-s

PS4 controller works with S6 Edge, the standard ones, lots of videos about for it etc, just something has changed in the Edge plus model. I have tried a couple of cheapie generic models but they don't work, and most list as working for S6 Edge, but not Edge plus, so I am trying to find one that I know definitely will work with the Edge plus, but seems to be proving difficult.
