I have a factory unlocked AT&T note 2 and I'd like to keep it unlocked. I think if I was to ever flash a rom then flash stock firmware that it would lock my bootloader to that carrier and that it would lock the recovery so only that carriers software can be applied through the over the air updates due to signature verification. Anyone know how to backup the whole firmware through adb. I'd hate to lock my phone to a specific carrier or software I like being able to just pop in a different GSM Sim card and stuff. I'm pretty sure once I switch carriers I'd get their software updates and be able switch out my current software. I see the stock firmware but I don't see one for the factory unlocked version. Once I can get the backup I'll try to convert it into a Odin flashable tar.

Odin flashable bota1 partition

Odin flashable stock recovery for this device nj2 build that I converted from img to a Odin flashable tar. Working on the boot image and bootloader now trying to get it figured out. I'll post Individually then try to get a full tar. This is my first time doing this.

Hmmm... this may be a moot point, as Samsung have stopped producing firmware updates for the Note II, so the chances of ever getting an OTA are pretty near 0%

The bootloader, or firmware for that matter has nothing to do with your ability to accept another Sim card. Once its been unlocked its unlocked.

. I'm pretty sure once I switch carriers I'd get their software updates .

Well seeing there aren't any more updates thats unlikely.... and in any case even if they were, then i don't think you'd pick up those updates anyway. Certainly not by swapping sim cards anyway.

You can switch software to right to which ever carrier your using that'swhat full uunlocked phone means. You can call your carrier and ask them they wouldn't sell unlocked phones which couldn't beuupdated to the carrier your using that'swhy they cost more mmoney you just got to know if you flash their stock firmware your phones going to be locked.

No... Carrier firmware is not related to the SIM lock status. They are different things, Although I grant you that in most cases, devices runing branded firmware do tend to be locked to that carrier.

Fully unlocked generally refers to the ability to put in a SIM from another network and have full service. You DO NOT need to have the carrier branded firmware to use that network. Updating the firmware to a later version (or different carrier) won't then lock the SIM. (There may be other barriers in place to stop you using a different carriers firmware.. but this is not not related to the SIM LOCK status of a phone one way or another).

(actually my carrier in the UK despite selling carrier branded firmware, has made a policy decision to sell all of their devices unlocked)

You may want to have a look at this thread

(just ignore the bits about Ponys)

If I update I'm using a custom rom. I just got off the phone with at&t and they said if you switch carriers you can go to that carriers store and they will flash the software onto your phone for you and set it up.
Maybe if you hear it from two people you'll believe. :)

AT&T support has yet to tell you anything truthful and they're just passing the buck. Standard operating procedure for carrier support.

If your SIM unlocked GSM phone supports other carrier radios - in hardware - you put in the other carrier SIM and change your APN settings.

That's it, custom or stock ROM. The whole enchilada, the end.

Use this site to see if your Note 2 is compatible elsewhere -

Btw - your phone's storage is divided into partitions.

A ROM only replaces the boot and system partitions. (Easily installed with an unlocked bootloader.)

The SIM lock is not stored in either one.

If the phone is SIM locked (aka carrier locked) you can flash roms all day long and not get it to work on another carrier.

If it was a carrier unlocked phone to begin with, there is no carrier version of the software to flash at the other carrier. Which is kind of the whole point of carrier unlocked phones in the first place.

The system updates are carrier software. So not everything you said is entirely true.
AT&T just sent a "carrier update" last week and it was accepted by international, carrier unlocked phones that had an AT&T sim installed. Other exact same phones on other networks did not receive the update.

The update consisted of changing the APN settings - and it didn't work. All with the problem had to use the values listed on the AT&T site and put the working values listed back into settings by hand.

If you did not buy an AT&T branded phone, carrier locked to AT&T then the only place you get actual system updates is from Samsung - just like the rest of the world.

If and only if you have a carrier phone do you get actual (not pretend) system updates from the carrier - and in such a case, you're locked out of getting updates from Samsung.

Everything I've said is exactly true.

I question what phone you really have. Nothing personal but you started with a lot of confusion over bootloader and sim/carrier unlocking and you've made the mistake we all have at some point - believing in good faith that your carrier has been telling you the technical truth about your phone.

They haven't been. They lie. Some of them probably believe the stories they've told you. Don't be fooled ok.

If your phone started out as an AT&T phone and you've exercised your rights under US law and had them unlock it for you, then your phone did have a past history of updates from AT&T.

But in such a case, it's only been SIM unlocked.

And the system you have will work without modification other than the APN settings for another network, within the radio capabilities described by the will my phone work site I linked earlier.

So not only is everything that @psionandy and I have said completely, absolutely, and totally true, listening to us is going to save you no end of frustration and grief.

Or - you can listen carefully to what he said - try it their way and have a learning experience.

Anyway, it's your phone, you can believe what you like. :)

Hope this helps!

Btw - here's why it's that way.

Suppose I have a manufacturer model, carrier unlocked and I use it for home and work on AT&T and T-Mobile by swapping SIMs.

If an update came out it would hit repeatedly every time I swapped the SIM because the carriers would want their version on the phone.

And they'd pay for that load on their servers and in customer support, even though I didn't buy the phone from either one.

And imagine the nightmare with a dual SIM phone on two different carriers.

It just doesn't work that way.

Manufacturer phones are updated by the manufacturer, carrier phones are updated by the carrier.

That's how actual system updates are.

It's amazing everyone wants to talk now but when I asked for help you all had nothing to say.
There's nothing amazing.

People help at random as time permits. No one here is getting paid.

Your complaint is with AT&T support lying to you.

If you use the information given here, you'll save yourself trouble.

You're welcome lol.

Well here's the thing... Your initial posting showed a major misunderstanding, which had a bearing on what you were trying to do. So even if someone did walk you through the ADB stuff it wouldn't have helped you do achieve the goal that you set yourself..

We just didn't want to waste your time.

Now. As you're not interested in what we've said so far, I wish you good luck in your future endeavors. It won't do what you want, but I've no doubt you'll learn 'something' along the way..

And with that I'll bow out of this thread and leave you to it.

You don't use adb to make firmware backups. There's no way to help with an impossible question.

And the help that you did ask for was based on no end of misinformation, effectively insisting that people help you screw up.

You have been treated with fairness, kindness, and politeness every step of the way.

There's no cause for your outbursts, name calling, or aggression.

It's not going to be tolerated further.
