Help infrared

Hello everyone,

Back in November of 2015, I bought the HTC One m9+ supreme camera edition with the help of a Taiwanese friend. This phone has an IR blaster. Since I bought it, I have tried many apps to sync it to my appliances, via infrared. However, none have worked. I am starting to get worried, that I have a faulty IR blaster. It will probably cost a lot to send it to HTC for repairs. So, before I do that, I was wondering, if there's a way to check if my IR blaster is functioning properly?

The IR transmitter is probably working just fine.

It is the Phase Modulation of the IR signal that is not syncing up to the appliances.

Are you using the Vendor supplied app for each appliance? That is what will provide the proper modulation scheme to get the appliance to recognize the signal...

Also, the HTC IR blaster "light beam frequency" must be the same as the Appliance is looking to see....

if the IR blaster is kicking out a Bright Red beam, and the Appliance is looking for a Purple beam, they will never work together....

Think of it like car headlights... normal filament bulbs are in the sub-white to yellow band.... around 3500°-4600° Kelvin in Lightwave Frequency Terms.....

Sunlight white is 5000° Kelvin degrees temperature.

HID headlights are all too often up in the useless to human eyes color of blue at 6700° Kelvin.....
Ego freaks think that is neat, but it is irritating as hell to on coming drivers... and their ability to see "down the road" is impaired considerably compared to a proper 5000° Sunlight White light beam.

more info than you wanted, but trying to put some perspective onto the "why it might not work".

Unfortunately, the supreme camera edition does not come pre-installed with an HTC app for the infrared. I believe the one m9 and one m9+ does. If I recall, the HTC infrared remote was just a peel remote designed specifically for the HTC Ones and one m9s. However, I do not see it on the app store. There is an HTC sponsored app called smart ir for HTC One, but it is $9.99 and also discontinued (no longer supported). What do you recommend I do?

I tried peel remote, anymote and this other app (forgot what it was called). I tried to sync my phone to a Westinghouse, hisense ruko smart TV, Samsung, and none worked.

Isn't there a universal app for IR blaster, that can control many different things, different brands and models of TV, cable or satellite box, DVD, hi-fi, etc. That works like "One-For-All" universal type remotes, where you find the codes for your devices from the manual or "One-For-All" website. Enter the codes and usually you're in business, or sometimes you can download directly into the remote via USB from a computer.

To check if the IR emitter is physically working, point it at a camera (digital) and press some buttons in any of your IR apps. It should appear as a bright white flashing light in the camera if it's working properly.

Will this work if it's not connected to a device? Can I download an infrared remote app and press the buttons without it being synced to check the infrared?

Peel and anymote, which I tried with no luck. That's why, I am thinking it could be my infrared...

IR is a one-way thing, the emitter in your phone sends commands to a device and that's it. Nothing comes back the other way. So any compatible IR app that lets you send IR commands from your phone should make it flash visibly when viewed through a camera. It doesn't matter if the commands are valid or not, you just want to test the emitter to see if it works.

I downloaded anymote, and although, I couldn't get it to sync via infrared with my TV, I kept it to solely press buttons. I saw no white/purple-ish light. I tried it with my regular remote Control and I did see a white/purple-ish light.

Try a few different IR apps, set it for random devices just to get it to send commands, and see if it has output with any of them. If you never see it flashing using the camera test there may in fact be a problem with either the IR hardware or system software that drives it. You could try a factory reset to see if that gets it working.
It is also possible that since the phone came directly from China it might be a version that does not have the IR blaster enabled even though it is physically there.

Whoa! You say "you saw no light".... that ain't gonna happen in your lifetime.
You must shine it at a camera, any camera, digital or analog.... so point it at another cellphone that is making a movie, the push the emitter app buttons on your HTC.
Or, set up the Digi camera to "make a Long exposure"

The IR emitter will show up in the picture as a White Light....

Human eyes cannot detect IR, but they can be blinded by it.... Never, ever, look into an IR emitter....
have you not heard the stories of pilots being blinded by IR?

I will try another infrared app when I am home. I read some comments in GSM arena and it seems 3/4 people complained that the IR blaster does not work for them. Also, my friend bought this phone from an HTC physical store in Taiwan. I will also call HTC.

Does the app need to be synced to a device via infrared for it to send a signal, so my camera can detect the light?

As I said, the IR signal is one-way so the app doesn't know if it's "synced" or not. All this presumably means is that when you do the setup it runs through a bunch of different codes for each device you want to control, and when it lands on the one that works you select that one and it's "synced". Shouldn't make any difference as to whether it is sending out codes or not.

I just tried it with the peel remote app, during the code setup (which will give out a signal), and there was no light being detected by my camera. I tried each code while my HTC One m9+ supreme camera edition, was pointed to my camera's lense. I'm thinking it's a dud. Unless, it is falsely being advertised with infrared.

Rynx: Did you get this prob fixed as I have the exact same prob. I bought my HTC One M9+ Supreme Camera from Android Enjoyed (Au) about 2 months ago. It didn't come with Peel, but it did have a lot of Chinese/HK TV apps and stuff - which I removed. Installed Peel and could not get it to work with anything. Tried many other TV/remote apps - nothing. Tried the camera trick and no light coming from the IR port. I can easily see the pale purple light from all the remotes I have. So the camera on this phone and my old Android phone works fine. Even though I bought the phone from an Aussie online store they imported it from HK. I've emailed HTC Australia - no response yet. If this IR port is stuffed I won't be happy.

Right - Not happy Jan!. I bought this phone for the IR port and other things. How can I download remove apps if there's no IR port? My old phone doesn't have one and I can't download these apps - Google Play says the app's incompatible. Why is there a black strip in the same place as the non-Supreme Camera Edition? GSMArena says it has an IR port. Why would this version not have an IR port but this M9+ does??? Not happy Jan!

Phonearena didn't update the specs for this phone. You should have read the comments though. Everyone stated there's no IR blaster. When I bought it, there was no comments about the IR blaster. But that's okay, I didn't buy it solely for the IR blaster.

You do not need an IR blaster to remove or download apps.

I remember looking around for a while until I settled on the One M9+. I didn't buy it solely for the IR either, but I do want it. The company that sold me the phone didn't mention it was the Supreme Camera edition. It was just listed as HTC One M9+, but that's OK, I thought when it arrived (from HK). I thought the only difference was the camera - which I don't really care that much about anyway. The people at Android Enjoyed can't answer any tech questions. Now I'm just waiting to hear from HTC and see what can be done about this.

Look at the back, if it says "Laser AF" on the small lense, it's the supreme camera, if it does not, it's the regular m9+.

Yep - it does, and it does say Supreme Camera Edition on the box. Android Enjoyed website just lists it as HTC One M9+ - no mention of camera or IR for that matter. Is the IR port actually their and just disabled? Or have they removed it all together? Odd that it's on the previous model and not this one.
