If science had reached such an incredible level of understanding and knowledge... and let's say that you had the option to live FOREVER and never age or die from disease and so on... would you take it?

Forget about being able to afford it... forget about all those questions - just think about living for eternity

If you would prefer more technical details then yes - you wouldn't age a bit in fact might even be able to look a bit younger if the knowledge was there...

SO... what say you?

I would not want to live forever.
Seeing everyone else being born, living, getting sick, dying would tend to wear you out emotionally I would surmise.
On top of that, the way this world is headed, I don't think I'd want to be around forever

Actually I think finding the key to stopping the ageing process is far more likely than this guy I saw on a TV programme recently. He was a Russian millionaire, who was obsessed with finding a way to digitise his brain, and download his consciousness into a machine, thereby living forever. Having the body of an android, while I can see the merits, I think I'd rather keep my own as I'm rather attached to it.
But anyway, replicating a brain is the stuff of science fiction.

I think I would looooove to live forever... it would be absolutely awesome!!!!

I would have all the time to accomplish what I have always wanted to do... take over the world! lol just kidding - there is soooooo much to do and sooooo much to see in this world that I wish I could have many life times just to see it all!

Doing everything that you have ever dreamed of!

And never having to worry about not having enough time in a single life time... don't you just wish we could live forever?

If we had colonised the universe, all our colonies could be gotten to instantly by a wormhole, everyone had enough to eat and all disease, disability and illness could be cured instantly, then sure I'd like to live for longer, say a thousand years, with an option to live longer if I wanted to.

Imagine being twenty five forever though, meeting the love of your life and they just want a normal life span and to age naturally. Could you go on knowing they would (not could) go first?

No, seriously. If they could stop aging so we could only die by accident, injury or suicide (no disease - all disease would need eradication first) then I'd go for that. I'd always want the option to die.

I fully agree, heck after some time I would even attempt a suicide, I just couldn't survive watching my friends die. And what about the end of the universe, sun becoming the red giant and other CATASTROPHIC events that will strike Earth? You surely cannot survive that. Well, thinking of death makes me sometimes BREAK emotionaly because it causes a dark feeling of your loved ones disappearing.. Into the ground.. Forever..

Well I would looooove the thought of being able to live for more than one life time... maybe about 1000 years

I could do see and have all the time to read up and explore all sorts of inventions and creations ... maybe a lot longer once travel between star systems is possible... imagine how amazing it would be to see other worlds and other life forms when in the future the technology is then very possible!!!

We could say hi to those aliens from Independence day and blow up their white house instead

Lol... but I am thinking twice now about living forever.... hmm... it would be kind of scary in a way if I could never die now that I think about it... once I have done everything I wanted to do... then what?

I just feel 1 lifetime is just not enough to accomplish all I have wanted to accomplish. So many languages and cultures to see... soo many wonderful parts of the world undiscovered... so much more to explore and inventions still yet to come that I would be so happy just to see ...

few issues that I see...

after 1000 yrs.. I might go crazy... bored. even a mass murder or suicidal or both.

the brain and storage in it. there must be a limit. after few hundreds of years..
it would get full. how will our brain coop? espounge the oldest memory.. make room for new ones?

if I clone myself... and it is an exact copy. then I kill myself... the clone lives on.

Did you not see Limitless?!! We use a mere fraction of our brain's total capacity. Goodness knows why, or what the other 90% of our neurons are doing

But what is consciousness? Ultimately you can boil it down to a representation of your brain function, and the data it stores. This could theoretically be replicated in digital form. The physical container for your consciousness doesn't really matter, if your brain was replicated fully, YOU would be alive.

Well this idea of clones, you're right, once you've got a clone of yourself, then they act independently and would become a different person. Because what makes you unique is the total of your knowledge and experiences. Any clone would become a unique individual.

But for the purposes of extending your singular life, then if you transferred all of your brain function to a machine capable of replicating it, then at the point at which the copying finished, you would have two identical brains, and thus a perfect copy of your personality and consciousness.

No that's a good point, there is no collective same consciousness. Or is there? It could be a hive mind like the Borg in Star Trek. I mean clearly there would be two physical 'bodies', but the consciousness is a perfect copy. It still begs the question of what is 'consciousness'. Wow this is deep, I want to know the answers!

Ok thinking about this more, there can only be one 'you' right? You can only be conscious in one physical body. So whatever it is that makes you conscious must get transferred to the new host, and your original body + conscious ceases to exist.

Jake's consciousness was transferred into a new body. His original body died, but his mind lived on in the alien's body. That's how I see it happening. You just wake up in a new body, with your entire memories and experiences preserved. You live on.

And so yes, I think I agree with you Dan. Copying a brain would only create a clone. We have no knowledge of how to transfer that special 'thing' that is you. It's science fiction.

So the guy who is currently trying to do this I think is completely wasting his time.

yeah.. in Avatar.. the life Tree.. MOVED the "you" into the new body. It did not copy anything.

but moving into a NEW body.. does not fix the Brain limit issue that was my original point.
moving into a COMPUTER.. might fix it. but I don't want to live like that.

I have put thought into this before... longer life and more brain capacity.
my only solution.. fix the current brain to handle more storage.
we are developing memory sticks that is getting bigger storage but smaller size devices.
in another 50 yrs.. can you imagine the amount of storage... and how small it might be?
put this in our brains.. to add more storage capacity.

yes.. there is still a limit.. but that limit is maybe thousands of lifetimes...
and I think by then.. we might be tired of living... or evolved to something else.

They already did. Matt Smith (11th Doctor) is already the 12th regeneration. You have to count the War Doctor and the time Tennant regenerated into himself. Capaldi (12th Doctor) is already the first of a whole new 12 regenerations granted to him at Trenzalore. Geek mode off.

Forever? No. Maybe 300-500 years or so. Or maybe sure forever but with the option to die anytime. Like a Jedi. I will myself to be one with the Force. I seem to remember that was a possibility.
