So.. I went to best buy yesterday to recycle two antique computers. I still laugh at the 390 mhz pentium processor.

I was not aiming to make money or anything.. just figured maybe recycling them would mean they may actually be used somehow, or it would be at the least better for the environment.. I am by no means a environmental freak.. but, I figured it was probably worth it to drop em off.

Well.. apparently in order to "recycle" there.. you get a 10$ gift card per computer... Which you have to pay the 10$ to get.

The ****** i spoke to claimed they have a "50$ fee we have to pay in order to recycle these computers" and tried to make like best buy is some sort of saint recycling these computers at a loss. I asked flat out "well.. can't you just take them and not give me any sort of cash back for it"... which he refused to do..

Newegg.com Is going to continue to receive pretty much all of my business regarding anything that can be bought at best buy.. they wanted 20$ cash so that I could recieve a 20$ gift card...

I flat out asked the guy "are you ****ing me?"...then pointed out "I don't care how much you have to pay to recycle them, the fact is if I wanted a best buy gift card, I'd come pay 20$ for a best buy gift card.. What burns me even more about the entire subject is how when I walked in they were all talking about how it was such a good thing to recycle....

When they tried to reconcile the issue with me about how "you will get your money back" I looked and asked flat out "great so how is a 20$ gift card gunna pay my bills."

I would prefer to recycle... But, I am not about to pay out of pocket for a gift card that I can't get anything with...

Would you care to be more specific? It saved him spending the recycling fees at a local place and getting nothing in return, yes?

Charging a fee to do the right thing, is ******ed. No recycling fee's here...

Jee, what would average joe to, throw it away for free, which is more convenient, or, spend money, and make a special trip to recycle it.

A large number of states have e-waste recycling laws that make it illegal to dispose of electronic devices in landfills. Doing the more convenient thing might very well be against the law. He could contact a local recycler and have it done for free.

I didn't recycle them.. I brought the computers back home and they are sitting at the end of my driveway waiting for garbage day.

I would get nothing in return if I were to do their stupid deal. I don't pay 100$ for those monster hdmi cords.. I get the cheapo's off new egg.

I don't buy video games there, I get used video games from gamestop.
I rent movies from block buster.

20$ gift card would be me with 20$ I am locked into using at best buy... I had 150$ in tax returns in my pocket.. but, I am saving for an n1 or possibly to build a computer.. so BB sure as hell is not getting my cash.

And to be honest.. even *if* there were laws against throwing away computers... It would be very easy to drive my car to school campus.. toss them in and drive off no one would ever know the difference :/.

I shouldn't have to pay money to try and do the right thing. A ripoff is a ripoff.

Beware of people so concerned about the environment that they refuse to make the changes that they demand the rest of us do.... and stand to make a boat load of money if you do what they say you should...

Best Buys Employees sucks, when you buy a new laptop, printer, monitor etc. they always wants to get you stupid things like promotions at .99cents for software, warranty from geek squad, stupid rebates and they insist that is good for you, they insist much that sometimes is preferable to say "yes" for shut they mouth.

Doesn't matter if they insist so much. You still say NO!

WOW. I would have said, "ok, watch this" and then walked out side and tossed the old pc's in their trash cans in front of the store and left lol.

I dont know if you ever thought to just drop them off at the Salvation Army or the Goodwill. Places like that get govt waivers so they wont have to pay to dispose of them and you dont have to worry about Johnny Law knocking on your door because you threw them in the trash.

It my be something you might want to look into.

What he said...

Also, I live in California. It's pretty jacked up. If I have an old monitor, **Generally** I would have to pay to recycle it, even though I just paid a $14 recycle fee on my new monitor.

Why I said "Generally" is because with a little research, you can get rid of your stuff for free. In my city, they have days every month where you can drop off old electronics for free. On top of that, there is the LA computer fair where you can do the same (I think they might even pay a buck or 2!). Just saying, do a search on where to recycle your items.

Please note, I don't buy into global warming, etc. I do, however, think it is good to recycle (especially electronics, which can have harmful components that can leak if dropped in a "dump".)

Lastly, I can understand Best Buy's policy. While I don't buy much from them, I definitely would buy a cell phone from them (and did). Why? Unlike a Verizon store, they do not ask for a restocking fee if you return a phone. I got an Eris at first, decided I didn't like it, and swapped for a Droid. My Eris even had a small scratch on the screen. No questions asked. I exchanged it and walked out happy. It pays to research. I guess they have to pay for things like that somehow, hence the gift cards...
