Tether Fix (Solution)

I can go back later and dig through logs to see what was the root cause of the problem. I had rebooted probably 20 times throughout the day changing settings and doing other fixes. Every time I would select the ..apnsettings, it would pop up and show an error that was long enough to cover the majority of the screen. It referenced multiple services not running or responding. I did a quick google and a few hits referenced ADB issues. I kept getting errors from Greenify stating that it couldn't hibernate several apps, so I read a little bit and realized that I needed X-posed framework installed to get the rest of the apps to sleep. I dl'd it, installed, rebooted, checked that Greenify worked, jumped back to Shortcut Master and it works all of a sudden. First thought is that X-posed, which was the only thing that had changed, was what fixed it.

I think it does have something to do with xposed. I was getting the same error message since the zv6 update. I tried manually wiping cache and dalvik after installing the app, and still got the error 2. Tried installing xposed, worked instantly. This makes me think something in the app is either dependant on xposed, or that installing xposed cleans up some file we're not aware of. They don't state you need xposed though, so I'm thinking the latter.

Did you try without installing greenify? The way greenify works, might be the cause of the error. While greenify is installed, Xposed straightens out?.?.?.
If it does turn out that is the issue, please go to the support site for greenify and leave whatever type of feedback that the dev needs. See if this issue can be resolved.
I had issues with Xposed modules working on a Walmart version (wife's) after the zv6 update, still testing. But the phone worked perfectly fine with or without the framework installed. That's why I think its not Xposed, but a module. In this case greenify.

BTW you can control wakelocks better and easier with MyAndroidTools by Wanqi, plus you can shutdown different services and activities for each app. Also so easy to use and run.

I only installed xposed framework, nothing else, not even a module. Ran shortcut master immediately after, and it worked without issue. I'm on Virgin, non Wal-Mart. Also, I've never had greenify installed.

Side note; After making the tether fix, I was able to uninstall xposed and shortcut master. The fix is permanent barring another update, or manually reverting the changes yourself, if anyone was wondering...

I just wanted to thank you VERY much. It worked like a charm on my Boost LG Tribute 2.
I needed it badly too. I was a Clear customer and even though we were supposed to have access till Nov 4, they disconnected us with no notice yesterday. We should get hooked up next week so this will REALLY help for the few days in between providers.
Have a great week end everyone.

Ps: I rooted my phone with King root then I followed that gentleman's method and used his script to replace King User with Super SU.

I hope I am allowed to post links here :)
Not bad for an old lady on a budget.

Glad it worked!! Thank you for the feedback. One more device to add to the list.
As far as links, it all good.
The Adreno mod I have in the downloads section will also work, I also have a return to stock Adreno zip there as well. The mod does a graphics performance by forcing use of the GPU. Check it out and leave some feedback and rate each of the resources in the downloads section that you use please. It helps me out.

Nice. Currently I'm using WiFi Tether Router (with what looks like the pillsbury dough boy on the splash screen holding an antenna, if that helps clarify), which was the first of 6 or 7 apps I tried that worked.
I'm using an LG Tribute, rooted.
Had rooted an old Kyocera Rise and it worked for tethering with almost any old app, which was nice, but I threw that phone and broke it...oh well.....
If the app I'm using now stops, this method will be next. Awesome!
Jerome -- thanks for the recommendation of WiFi Tether Router. It's the only thing I could get to work on my LG Tribute (rooted stock, using RingPlus service over Sprint). Well worth the $2.80 (every other tethering app I tried failed miserably!).

For whatever reason, HasH_BrowN, this fix would not work on my rooted Sprint LG Tribute (running latest ZV6). The mod "sticks" (I can see the APN change after a reboot), but the hotspot menu item never appears. Oh well, thanks for your work nonetheless. At least I have a working solution. Thanks!

For clarity, did you try to setup a hotspot? (Just to see if it did work)

If I couldn't get to the Hotspot menu option (using the APN mod), how would I have been able to set up a hotspot? Perhaps I'm not understanding the question...? o_O
So when you say APN your not talking about the menu through Shortcut Master, but the menu through wifi settings. If thats the case and it wasn't in wifi settings, I wonder what ##service menu it becomes available in.

BTW thanks for the feedback :)

Also for most Tribute users, the wifi hotspot is shown in the wifi settings. But w/o fix it's unusable.
Hope others will post their results as well

Sorry, I am not being very clear (or detailed) in my comments. I *did* use Shortcut Master to make your recommended APN change (adding "dun"). It is interesting -- one time (before making ANY changes at all) while in the Networks/More... menu, I hit Back button and briefly saw the text "Tethering" on the screen as a menu item (that is what I see on my Sprint Galaxy S3 also). Never been able to recreate that "flash" again. So honestly, my guess is that the menu item SHOULD appear there under "Network/More..." as "Tethering", but adding "dun" to that setting is not triggering the display/access for this particular phone/firmware.

FWIW, I have looked under WiFi (all menu/submenu options) and don't see anything related to HotSpot on my Tribute (and I went back and checked -- the "dun" fix is still present). My Tribute is a Sprint-branded prepaid -- not Boost, Virgin Mobile, etc.

i installed the shortcut master opened and follow direction, get to the hidden menu with the greyed out one you said and press lauch, get error 2, read other posts that said they installed x-posed and then it worked... not the case for me....
with error 2 is gives a long list like the one from a person on the first page of thread, installed x-posed rebooted and tried again, still get error 2, cant proceed... idk what needs to happen but i could really use my wifi tether/ hotspot.... when i first got the phone i could just use it and now it has updated twice i think but still on kitkat 4.4.2, it is rooted, on boost mobile, lg tribute ls660...

HasH_BrowN maybe you have some insight?

@scary alien @WarrantyVoider would either of you be able to to help the post above (#37). Im not familiar with Java exceptions.
Do the errors mean there is an issue with root? Installing Xposed framework doesnt seem to be helping the user like it did for someone else.

thank you... root checker says it has root and i have supersu.. just so y'all are aware...

@HasH_BrowN, that's (^^^) the recovery log, right?

I was thinking more along the lines of an "adb logcat":

start the app in question

from your PC:

c:\> adb logcat > logcat.txt
back to the phone, do / perform that action and make the issue happen

back to the PC:

hit control-C to stop the logcat capture
look at / review / post-up the relevant lines from the logcat.txt file to AF for us to look at.

Sorry. Haven't logged on for a while.
I am not familiar with Shortcut Master, but it looks like it tries to call ActivityManager (part of Android itself) to launch LG's Hidden Menu apk. Not sure what causes the error, but the error says the ActivityManager instance can't be retrieved. Maybe some service didn't start correctly or there was a problem with permissions somewhere.

I've never tried, but to call that hidden menu apk from the command prompt (with ADB or a terminal emulator app) without Shortcut Master, I think this might do:
am start com.lge.hiddenmenu/com.lge.hiddenmenu.vzw_only.ApnSettings

I don't know if root privilege is needed though. Not sure if this helps or if it even makes sense to you. Ask if you need instructions. Maybe someone can explain or I can elaborate when I have time to do so. Good luck.

I just flashed the xperia mod ROM for the Volt recently, and this method seems to rely on something that was removed in the de-bloat process?

Error: Activity class {com.lge.hiddenmenu/com.lge.hiddenmenu.vzw_only.ApnSettings} does not exist.

Shortcut master and adb seem to tell me this no longer exists on the phone. Using the ##data# menu, I can see the setting I need to modify, but it's greyed out. ;(

^^^ I don't believe root is needed for using/launching an app via the activity manager (am) utility.
You're right. We don't need root for ActivityManager. But the hidden menu app probably requires more than the basic user privilege. In fact, using "am start" with hiddenmenu as I described on an unrooted phone causes a Java security exception. I am not sure whether doing it with root privilege would work as expected though.

Get HiddenMenu.apk (and/or HiddenMenu.odex, not sure which version your rom requires) from a stock rom. If the fix just stores some setting (enabling dun/pam), maybe it would work once you have HiddenMenu.
