unfortunately no reply from samsung yet

The only reply you're likely to get is "please give us our tablet back", I'm afraid. :)

They might have given him a shelf demo for a discount, or he accidentally enabled retail mode.

The -X in the model string identifies it as an official Samsung demo device.

Store demos come in clearly-labelled boxes identifying them as "not for retail sale" so should never make it into the stock cupboard. Also retail devices won't have Samsung Retail mode installed; it's baked into demo-specific firmware.

My best advice is to return it for a refund as "unfit for purpose".

Same problem with a used tab I bought. The whole number isn't there, but theSM- T230NU ends in a u.
The model number seems to match a series sold in Target, but Target has none like this one listed. It also matches a phone's ID but it's printed on the case, not a stencil or overlay of any kind and it starts with CE

The seller said it was running 5.0, however the about tablet says 4.4.2. I turned it on and promptly got a notice for update, but since I can't figure out what it's updating besides stagefright, I want more info before I even think about allowing it to update.

The tablet is working fine - It's for At Bat which the Acer can no longer play after an update to At Bat. Think the framerate could be too fast or something in that area.

How do you tell which version of an OS you have? Opening screen?
My Acer A-500 updated from 4.0.1 to 4.1 right after I bought it. The info in about tablet never changed.
