I had my Incredible up at State College, PA with me for about a week before returning home in Pittsburgh. Up there, I generally got around 1.2-1.4 Mbps 3G data speeds.

I figured that the same quality of service would be provided to me at home, given that I am now living near a major urban center. My speeds are much, much worse in my house. The best speed I have gotten is 500 kbps (average at ~128kbps), and that was late at night during off-peak hours.

I was with Sprint for a short time with the Palm Pre (a month trial period). I got excellent speeds with Sprint's data network. I figured that Verizon would be able to provide me with a similar data experience (both EV-DO Rev. A AFAIK), especially in considering the fact that I'm paying 30 dollars a month for data. 128kbps is absolutely unacceptable.

I'm trying to figure out whether the issue is that this phone has an abysmal radio in it or whether it is a network issue.

I do not think its your phone, it sounds like its a tower 3g issue. I only get about -99 signal strength at 1 bar at about 600kb

i got about the same signal strength with my bb storm, but the incredible is actually usable at -99 where as i had to walk around my condo for a few minutes to get the internet working on my storm.

Have you tried dialing *228 to update the towers on your phone?

You should also try and get a hold of a sprint smart phone and test its coverage where you got weak coverage with your incredible.

4g coverage is going to be weak until sprint puts up more towers. Actually a couple of years ago sprint sold most of its towers to build up its cash reserve to offset the huge loss they took when they absorbed Nextel. Now Sprint rents the towers they sold.

That said, if you are in a strong 4g coverage map, then the evo will freaking rock.

I live in Altoona and frequent between State College and Pittsburgh. I get the same results in State College and a little better in Altoona. Pittsburgh is another story. I went to a lot of hockey games this year and while that does congregate a lot of people in one area, I noticed my coverage downtown was spotty. Certain areas around town were great (Wexford, South Side..), but others were just abysmal.

That said, I think Spring is bringing 4G to Pittsburgh soon if you decide to go that route.
