Problems with SD card after Marshmallow

I haven’t found a fix for this problem, despite a fair amount of research. Clearly, it’s related to using the SD card as internal storage, but the erratic nature of the events make it difficult to pin down a cause and remedy. I have enjoyed my Motorola 3G. That is, until the Marshmallow update, which coincided with the occurrence of several annoying processes. My phone has 8 GB of storage (I couldn’t afford more), and so I took advantage of the ability to make my SD card part of permanent storage, moving apps to it, which should have worked. Several issues ensued. First, the SD card is not always recognized, leading to problems; Settings, Google Play, and other apps sometimes “stop working.” Some apps are greyed out on the home screen (fixed with reset); apps disappear from home page but are in app folder; apps disappear from app folder (recovered with restart originally, now seem to have disappeared). I’m also now getting a few random resets. No data is important, so I can do fixes that require resets and large eliminations of applications. Thanks for any help in advance.

Unfortunately, that is the big drawback of making the sd card adoptable/internal storage.

Best to just get rid of the card and start over, if the data is not important. Once the sd card goes bad as adoptable, it's useless. Can't reuse it. Unless you try and transfer the data to a pc, the data is probably screwed.

Get a new card, keep it as external/portable.

Just curious, what is the brand name on the card? Where did you buy it? What was the size of the card that went bad?

... and did the card have the certifications printed on it that were stated in the documentation as the requirement for use as an extension to internal storage?

Good thoughts. Thanks for the advice. Originally planned for a hard reset with a new card. “Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose” so I decided to experiment. First, I had the phone forget the card. Then, I reinstalled the card as portable. No problems. Made me think about having a lean and mean set of apps. Was okay with that, but decided to try it as internal storage. So far, no problems. Will see how it goes and have a card ready.

Card is a SanDisk 32 Ultra from Office Depot or Best Buy.

Got my kids the SanDisk 32 Ultra at costco. Had issues with both of them as internal storage. Nothing seemed to get loaded on them and on one of the Moto Gs the card would randomly disconnect and my daughter would have to physically remove it and reinsert it to get it to be recognized again. I wondered if it was the cards? Returned one and my son used an old 16gig I had of another brand and hasn't had issues since.

Thanks for the comment. After forgetting card and reformatting, I have had very few problems and none of the ones I mentioned. Pretty workable. Any more probs and I'm going to the Samsung card I bought to replace the Sandisk, which has been pretty reliable for me as an SD card. I can't confirm this, but I think some of the apps are likely to cause some instability, especially when loaded on the card.For now, keeping my essentials light just in case. Phone important, but not my "life" as with some folks.

Should be able to get the SD back to a usable state, it's only the partition table that's unreadable, it's not damaged physically. Sure when it's done as adoptable storage, it's formatted in a special way, probably EXT4 or something, which Windows or Mac won't usually recognize anyway. A media partitioning/formatting utility will do it, like Disk Utility in Mac OS X, or it's in Administration Controls in Windows Control Panel, or use GParted in Linux.
