Facebook Messenger using 45% of the power when phone idle and connected to 4g

The titler explains it. Is there a way to reduce the power without turning mobile data off? Apps can't be automaticly killed and mobile data can't be turner on or off without root access so I don't think it's possible to toggle it on and off to preserve battery. I can't be the only one with this issue?

I am interested in how much it's draining compared to the other apps, even if it's draining 1% of the battery every hour, my phone would still last twice as long if I terminated the app (4 days vs. 2 days). Screenshot coming.

chanchan05, you said in my other thread that even if I terminated the app, it would just start back up again? Why is that?

Because it actively pulls for notifications.

This time I had facebook on Chrome by accident, seems like it doesn't matter whether I use the Messenger app or a browser, mobile data will drain regardless.

Rooting my phone and then have Tasker toggle mobile data on/off with a really low duty cycle (1% on, 99% off for instance) would probably fix the whole issue while while still being reachable on facebook when I'm outside, right?

MLSS: I tried manually terminating Messenger, it doesn't automatically start up on my phone at least.

I turned off the setting "mobile data always on" and that seems like a fix, now my Truecaller app seems to be on top, while Messenger is down to 7% of battery consumption (which is a massive difference). I assumed that this setting simply turns mobile data off when the screen is off, but I still get instant notification from Messenger when my screen is off, so I don't really understand it. I tried to do some googling and saw some people proposing that this setting will turn mobile data off after a delay (10-15 minutes), but that can't explain the massive difference in battery drain.
