Disabling apps running in the background

I have apps on my phone that I use but they run in the background. I don't want them running in the background. I don't want the app to run until I open the app.

Is there a way to stop these apps from running in the background?

Note that there is not really any point in stopping an app from running unless you know it is causing unreasonable battery drain, and in that case its best to uninstall it. Android is designed to keep apps in RAM to speed up start up times.

The are apps such as Greenify which can prevent apps from performing background tasks and save battery, but in most cases it negates the purpose of the app. If you have a recent Samsung phone there is a similar feature called "app optimisation"

They most likely have some services that you can't stop from running, or the app will not function as designed.

You have a few choices.

• turn off Notifications for that app
• turn off the Internet totally unless you need it. ( this is what I do )

I always leave DATA turned off, it is not needed unless you are away from home, and then you need the internet. That is the only time my phone ever has DATA turned on.

and, I use a Macro to turn the WiFi off when the screen is locked. I only turn WiFi back on if I need it... About 50% of what I use my phone for does not require the internet at all, so why waste battery power if it is not needed?

My wife's Galaxy S5 has not seen the internet for almost a year... for her it is a game toy, and accidentally, a means of yelling at me from a distance

Leaving apps running in the background isn't really a problem most of the time. There are just a couple of annoying things in some apps that I use. I don't use the apps often but I do use them. They send me reminders that I could care less about. Then there are some that will bring up things they put in my display bar at the top of the phone.

In the settings of most apps you can disable notifications- have you checked that for the apps concerned? If no good, you should be able to go to:
settings
manage apps
ALL tab
find the app
untick the "show notifications" box (just below the Force Stop box)

This might work for the other reminders as well.

Indeed this is a good article and it mentions developer mode, but it failed to mention one pertinent thing: In the developer mode menu you can also limit the number of background processes that run simultaneously (even having no background processes if you want). Now: This will likely make your phone slower, as others have mentioned, but if you want extreme battery saving then this would be the way I would go.
