Android Question

HTC10: When I attempt to save a picture sent to me by text, the phone briefly displays a box at bottom of screen which states "storage unavailable." How do I solve this problem. The phone has 15 GB of available internal storage and 58 GB of SD card storage formatted as internal storage. I have rebooted the phone and assured the SD card is securely inserted. Suggestions/Solutions?

Don't know if this is the issue (because I don't want to reformat my sdcard) but have you checked the permissions for the messages app (or whatever you use for sms) in settings, manage apps ?
I checked permissions for the app "Messages" and found "Storage" was off. Turned it on, and returned to the text message with the photo of "Oreo" the kitten and clicked it--same message, "Storage is unavailable." If I press and hold on Oreo's pic, up comes "Message options: Save/View" but either one I choose, I then get "Storage is unavailable."

After the "Storage is unavailable" message fades away (about 4 seconds), behind it is a set of options: "Open with Photos: Just Once/Always" or "Use a different app: Amazon Photos / ES Image Browser." I select "Open with Photos: Just Once," and can see the pic and enlarge it by double-tapping. But the only options on the screen are "Help & Feedback" in the top right corner under the menu 3-dot symbol, and "i" at the bottom of the screen for "Details" about the photo: /part/8 3MP 2048 x 1536 568KB

The third option on the screen is the back arrow in the top left corner. When I select that, it takes me to Google Photos and shows me the photos I took yesterday with the phone's excellent camera, but which are NOT backing up to Google Photos over wi-fi as they are set to. The only way I can get them to back up is to use the top left menu to go to "Settings" then "Back up & Sync" then under the heading "Cellular data back up" click the button on for "Photos", and then click the button on for "Videos." I have selected also "When to back up: While charging only" in order to hopefully make sure the photos only back up when I'm in a wi-fi environment where I have the phone plugged in (at home and at work) rather than in the car where I might not plug it in to the charger unless I'm on a long trip.

The only solution that I've found is using Google Messenger as my primary messaging app. At least until they fix the stock HTC Messages app. I'm sure that you can use other messaging apps that should work as well. I just happen to prefer Google Messenger to others. So now I can save photos and they're also uploading to Google Photos as long as you turn on the option. Hope this helps at least some of you.

Hi Joseph Mendoza. Welcome to the Android Forums. Does this work when you've already formatted your SD card to Adoptable storage? The reason I ask is it looks like Migrate data wants to move the stuff on the SD card to the phones memory. I've only got 17GB left on the phone and it looks like 44GB of memory will be transferred from there to the phone.

I think your solution is going to be the best answer but I want to be sure before I start his hour long process.

i found the same problem on my Verizon HTC 10. after reading the comments here i reformatted my sd card to removable storage, to try and see if that works. it did not. HOWEVER after that i reformatted the sd card back to internal storage, as i initially did when i installed the sd card and VOILA... saves from stock messenger app now. hope this helps.

I have the same problem on my HTC10 - I get the "storage is unavailable" when I click photos in text messages. I have formatted my SD card as internal storage and it works perfectly for everything else. One of the "solutions" mentioned here is questionable. Migrating your data off the SD card is not a solution since we all got SD cards for storage. Checked my permissions for Messenger but storage permission was granted and no joy. Has HTC responded to this issue? Do we have to use some other app for messages? I'd like to keep the card formatted as internal because it allows more things to be moved off of internal storage but this problem seems intractable.

Yes, I was using the Google Messenger app with all my data on the SD card and it worked perfectly. I've tried every solution to be able to use the Stock Messages app but had zero luck in getting it to work. I used Google Messenger because I like the app but I'm sure that many other SMS apps will work just fine. I've moved on to another device already but I used GM when I still had the HTC 10. Also, I didn't get a different device because of this issue or any other but rather because I have a problem with switching devices all the time. I'm currently using the Nextbit Robin and loving it.
