Help Cannot Install Apps

I have a used HTC PC36100. It's running Android version 2.3.5. I was only using it to play Spotify music because it had upgradable storage.

I was having trouble installing applications through the Market. Every time I tried it, the phone would show "Starting Download..." and it would be stuck on it. I searched for a solution and there was something about clearing the Android Market app's data. That didn't work. I discovered that I could install apps through the Google Play Store on my computer. That worked for a while. But now, any time I try to install an app, the Google Play Store shows that it's installed, but it doesn't install on my phone.

I tried a factory reset, and that hasn't helped. I also tried to install an app without an SD card installed, but that isn't working either.

Uninstalling the Market's updates does nothing either.

How do I fix this?

Android 2..3.5 is ancient, in phone chronology. First, I'm surprised the "market" app still works as the Android Market has been the Play Store for several years now. I would think at the least you'll need to update the market to the play store, although I would surmise that a good number of the play store apps are simply incompatible with such an old device.

So I can no longer install apps on this device because it is simply too old?

Well, GG Android

When the play store took the place of the market, yu opened your market app and scrolled to the market. It showed an update available and you installed it. That would replace the old market app with the play store. I would assume it works the same now.
Well there is nothing like that on the Market app.

Right now I'm seeing if I can update the firmware but it's taking a while to check for a firmware update.
