If you're like me and upset about the extra fees associated with the EVO, I urge you to take action! I wrote to dan@sprint.com and voiced my concerns. You should too! I hope that if enough people write in with their concerns about the extra fees, Dan and company may reconsider. They have a chance to hit a home run with the EVO, but I fear they are shooting themselves in the foot with greed. I don't want to see that happen - do you? So please, for everyone's sake, write in and voice your concerns (in a polite way).

Thanks!

Okay, I agree that it's 99% likely to not be his real email address. However, it was received by some part of the company, who replied with a form letter. Whether they contact me or not is irrelevant; whether Dan himself reads it is irreleveant.

The point is, "consumer uproar" does get things changed. For "uproar" to take place, it needs a lot of us saying the same thing. If enough people complain through various channels, bad policies do change. So take a minute or two and compose that email!

Most people just 'suck it up'. But look at it from a person that has 3-4 lines on his account that may eventually have these 'data rich' phones. Thats $30-$40 per month more just because it says EVO on their phones.

I'm sure once the EVOs hit the street and start getting used, people's data usage will not increase so much that the $10/mth fee makes sense.

I look forward to about 3-4 months from the day they hit the streets for people to look at their data use history on Sprint's site to see if the EVO actually uses that much more data like Sprint is making it out to be. I know if my usage doesn't change that much, i'll be contacting sprint questioning the $10 extra they charged me.

because from what I understand they arnt charging you for service or data usage, they are charhging you for the phone itself because its a high end phone. Like a rental fee to use it!

Thats not what Sprint is saying:

John Taylor's posterous - Banter about Tech policy, mobile phones and Sprint

"If you buy the Sprint 4G EVO, you have to pay this $10 charge each month. This is specific to the device. It's not related to whether you are using 3G or 4G. It is required if you have the phone.

Because the phone has a faster processor, a huge 4.3 inch screen and an 8 megapixel camcorder/camera, we expect you will be using a lot more data than you would with our other devices. These features will give you capabilities that have previously never been available on a wireless device and we think they provide a premium experience. (Remember, this is the world's first 3G/4G Android phone.)"

My question is, if they are charging extra because they expect you to use more data are they going to remove the 5GB cap on 3G usage? Why would I need to pay more if I am under the same cap as people not paying the evo tax.

If 4G is available the charge makes some sense because 4G is unlimited. In theory, if you have good 4G reception you could run your whole house off of the evo and drop your ISP.

Yes, it's already been confirmed & discussed elsewhere. You pay the "evo tax" and the 3G cap is removed.

Exactly, hes not saying you are paying for the data you are using, hes saying you are paying for having a high end phone that has more capabilities than other phones. He says Sprint "EXPECTS" for you to use more data, so if I dont can I "EXPECT" to not have to pay extra? No because Im paying for the phone itself. In fact its not gaurenteed I or you will be able to use 4g because 4g isnt offered everywhere. Where in his statement does it say I will get any extra service for my 10$ he does say I pay 10$ for getting a phone that has extras? Data usuage will not go up or down. Furthermore if I want to use the hotspot I have to pay 29.99, again the 10$ is a luxury tax to use the phone not the service!

No, because in order to do that you have to pay the 29.99mo charge also to access the hotspot capability!
