Help Update HTC 8 to android marshmallow

Is the phone carrier branded? What does going to settings>about phone>software updates give you?

in my phone I have setting->System updates->HTC software update and then I have three options to tick on :
  • Update over WiFi only
  • auto-download system updates
  • auto-updates apps
a post from youtube suggests to tick on the first option then click "check now" and a popup message should come up asking to download the latest version of android but in my case, its checking for more than hour now and still nothing !?

thanks

I'm guessing one of two things:
Your phone has been modified (root/etc...),which in most cases prevents updates from the mfg/carrier OR
your phone is a carrier-branded one which requires their SIM Card/service activation for the update to be pushed to your phone.
One other possibility:
If you bought this phone used,it may be reported lost/stolen & subsequently blacklisted, which in all likelihood would not be updated by anyone.

You could also flash an HTC M8 Marshmallow RUU for your specific device.

OK, I think M8_WHL means it's a Sprint phone. That could well be the problem with getting an over the air update (it's a US carrier model that's not registered with their network).

S-Off probably means the phone has been modified (usually a few are shipped in that state by mistake, but that's unusual, and I'd think even more so for a Sprint phone). That CID definitely says "modified" to me (it's the "super CID", which means it will accept any RUU - which is not the same as saying you should flash just any RUU!). The rest may or may not be stock: you could try running a root checking app, or posting the full software information from the settings (a custom ROM or kernel would be identifiable that way, though someone simply using Root to remove bloat would not).

We don't have CDMA phones my side of the Atlantic, so maybe best to wait for someone more familiar to advise, but my feeling would be to only use a Sprint RUU on this phone. Normally an RUU won't run unless it's for that model, but that phone has had some of the protections bypassed - gives you more flexibility when modifying the software, but also makes it possible to flash things you should not. And as the radio hardware will be different for a Sprint phone I'd be wary of flashing non-Sprint firmware.

It's also possible your ROM or recovery are custom, though the fact that it's locked may mean that someone returned it to stock. If you have an custom recovery it would be easy to update to MM using a custom ROM, but it may be better to update other firmware too. Have to go offline now, but I'm sure KOLIO will be able to advise later.

I've had this phone before, but,it has been a while, two years & although the One series shares a lot of commonality as for methods of modifying/etc...,some things do change from model to model/year to year.
Therefore,I'm just gonna list some links for what appears to be a Sprint HTC M8 & have those better versed w/this particular version of the M8 advise.
Either way, there's no question your phone has been modified,an OTA isn't in the cards, you'll need to get it by other means.

As Hadron mentioned,it may be necessary to restore some items to stock before updating, whether by a custom ROM or an HTC RUU.
Try the 1st link I posted,it's for the root section of the HTC One M8 forum right here @ A/F.
Not only some of the best expertise in all things HTC in that section, but, also, some of the nicest/coolest peeps you'll find anywhere in such forums.
If you're not familiar w/the topics here (modifying/root/ROMS/RUU's),that's OK,we're all here to help one another & we'll do our best to get you on your way to getting that update. :thumbsupdroid:
