Can't link phone to my Google Account

I wanted to change the Google account that my phone was linked to, so I cleared the google app.

Now when I try to sign in using my google account to link the phone with the phone (the new one or the old one) it asks for my login info, then says Signing in and says it may take up to 5 minutes.

Then it gives me a message that says:
"Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.

This could be a temporary problem or your SIM card may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care."

I have called customer care and they can't figure it out. They told me I need to go to a Sprint Store that does service, but there isn't one very close to me, so I'd rather not take half a day to drive there if I don't have to.

I have full bars and everything else works great. I can get my email, use the internet and do everything else that doesn't require the use of the google account. But I can't use the google mail feature or go to the Marketplace.

I'm using 1.56.651.2 and haven't really done anything else to the phone as far as changing settings or rooting or anything.

I've had the problem for about 3 weeks, and have tried more times than I care to count. At first I was just going to live with it for a while, hoping that when 2.1 came out that would fix it. But when it first happened I thought that it was only keeping me from using the gmail app, and I can get my gmail through the mail app. But when I realized that it keeps me from the market, it became a bigger issue for me.

Turning on wifi didn't work.

If I do a hard reset, what to I need to do to back all the stuff on my phone. Pics, videos, contacts and stuff. I've never really done anything to back it up and I want to make sure I can get it all back after the reset if I decide to do that.

pics are backed up on sd card, videos too...text won't be backed up unless you have an app that does that. but honestly, who cares about texts ;) since you're not connected to google you will lose your contacts. do you have them saved on paper or possibly in an old cell phone? give the hard reset a try :) best of luck.
