Samsung launch U.S. unlocked, carrier free, S7 & S7 Edge no bloatware

Just announced that Samsung are releasing unlocked and unbranded models of the popular Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge for the U.S.A.. Essentially they are the same Snapdragon models but without the locked bootloaders and bloatware!!!

I've no particular fondness for Samsung over any other brand, but what sold me on the S7 line - instead of competing phones from, say, LG, Motorola, HTC, etc., - was their forward-thinking implementation of the MST technology to enable secure mobile-payment at pretty much every single point-of-sale terminal in the US.

Do these carrier-unlocked phones allow for Samsung Pay? If so, this new news is quite welcome.

Yes... they do as you do not have to be carrier locked for Samsung Pay or Android Pay.

Firmware downloads for most of the major U.S. carriers are being released for the U.S. models of the Galaxy S7, G930U, and the Galaxy S7 Edge, G935U. So far the Galaxy S7 Edge firmware is showing, here.

This is now looking more like the Canadian, regional model setup, whereby the Canadians have a model/firmware for their country and it is then sub-divided into carrier firmwares. So, the G930W8, S7, and the G935W8, S7 Edge, which in turn are given carrier firmwares.

I cannot see a reason at the moment, why existing U.S. Snapdragon, carrier branded models could not be flashed with these firmwares other than for the fact that they have locked down bootloaders which will probably prevent this.

I have Verizon. Verizon does not lock their phones. But they also don't allow any non-Verizon phones on their network. I think they check the ESN of the phone. So I'm not sure you could use one of these new Samsung unlocked S7's on Verizon.

I'm pretty sure they didn't used to allow non-Verizon phones on their network. But I guess they've changed that policy. Good to know.

I have the Verizon Galaxy S7. It works on both CDMA and GSM. It seems that most 4G phones are like that these days.

You need GSM for 4G/LTE. However the Verizon model's 4G/LTE is not compatible with the majority of worldwide GSM networks unfortunately.

You're the one muddying the waters by mentioning Europe,he made no mention of Europe,implied or otherwise.

I'm only going from my experience with Verizon. All the 4G/LTE phones that I looked at that Verizon has support both CDMA and GSM. But you obviously know more than I do about it, so I'll just shut up from now on.
