Samsung Galaxy S vs HTC Desire

I am due for an upgrade but I am not sure if I should get the HTC Desire or wait for the Samsung Galaxy S?

So basically here are the pro's and con's:

Galaxy pro's:

4 inch Super AMOLED screen is superior to the Desires

Camera is superior, can record HD video

More attractive (IMO), even though its close

1500mah battery (longer battery life than Desire's 1400mah)

Galaxy con's:

Does not have the Sense UI (I have never used it myself but have heard that it is good)

Will most likely be more expensive

No flash player (how good is the Desires flash player anyway?)

No flash for camera

I can't really make a decision on this so I would like to ask the experienced people here if the Samsung interface is any good as well as the question above and what you think is the better device.

Here's something worse. The Galaxy S will come with TouchWiz, Samsung's own proprietary skin over Android. Let me tell you: it's crap. And ugly. Very ugly.

Technically, Flash will come with Android 2.2 in any case. Now, whether the Desire or the Galaxy S will get updated to 2.2 first is anyone's guess.

Can't coment on the Samsung, but I can tell you the sense UI is the slickest thing I've ever used on a phone.

I've got the desire and it's pretty awesome.

Downsides to it, screen can be difficult to see in strong sunlight and the email imports all spam aswell as my inbox. Apart from that, it's great.

I think I will have to try the interfaces for myself to decide.

But its good that 2.2 will come with a default flash player.

Don't forget that a major pro for the Galaxy S is the Hummingbird processor, which is superior to the Snapdragon in the Desire.

Definitely the Galaxy S. I was trying to wait for them to come out but my old phone gave out and I gave up waiting The Desire is an amazing phone, but the Galaxy S is far better, from a hardware perspective at least.

My personal experience would point to the HTC Desire. I own a G1 and a Moment...one for work, one for personal use. I also had, and returned, a Samsung Behold II & Intrepid.

I am not impressed with Samsung phones at all. On the moment and behold, I am constantly battling quirks (some major and some minor) and battery life with the Samsung units. I also had the non android Samsung Intrepid, and that had all sorts of problems too....I returned that as well. The G1 on the other hand, has done everything I've asked of the hardware with no problems. On the Moment, I had to flash to 2.1 to get rid of many of the problems, but I'm still getting random reboots etc....

Samsung's designs are nice visually, but no thanks....I gave them a very fair shake but I like my phones to work. Save yourself the headache and get the Desire....even if it is supposedly slightly slower.

If I could exchange my Moment for a Hero, I'd do it today.

i agree htc are good having had a couple myself, samsung have had mixed reports in the past however the I9000 is their flagship device with android and all reports so far have been extremely positive

no it was samsungs own software which isnt that good, hardware is superior and of course android!

the screen alone is amazing! you can actually see the screen perfectly in sunlight unlike the desire and all other oled screens....

I would not get a Samsung phone. They are buggy and poorly supported. The Galaxy S looks like a cheap iPhone rip off. Why would anyone want to rip off the iPhone anyway?

For the subjective opinion stuff, well, I love my Desire and I think it looks better than the Galaxy S. It has more hardware keys which I like. The galaxy's screen is it's big pro as I see it, I would like a Super-OLED screen, not that I've found the Desire much, if any, harder to see in sunlight than my Hero or Nokia N95.

The killer is Sense UI ... I never want to be without it.

I think you're already made up your mind. Go for the Galaxy, if you don't like it; Return it. You're only out some time. Then you can pick up a Desire.

I love my desire and the Sense UI is slick and responsive. I switched from a iPhone Gen 1 and this phone has blown it away.

I don't know how much of a difference you'll notice between the two processors and their speeds but if it is truly faster than the desire and the TouchWiz UI doesn't hamper it, it will be holy-hell fast!

because the iphone has revolutioned the smartfone market, so it makes perfect sense to go after their market share worked for me!

super amoled is more power efficient than standard oled.

when choosing any fone go play with both and you will usually find one is better!

being an iphone user, sure the desire is nice but didnt impress me as much as the galaxy and thats just from the videos!

Can't go wrong with either, both are superphones.

Galaxy S has better hardware, Desire has better UI (and HTC>Samsung in terms of smartphones).

If the Galaxy S is rooted and some things (LIKE GETTING RID OF YAHOO) can be changed (which given the hardware, I am sure developers would be all over that), then it probably will be the better phone. But it depends on alot of things about the phone itself, stuff we do not know as of right now.


Good choice on the Desire though. It really does seem like an amazing phone.

get the Desire ! yeah , galaxy S provides 80% better reflection under sun , but as long you dont use your phone often under the sun , then there is no difference between them. The Galaxy S having humming bird processor which is better than Desire Snapdragon processor . But , is the differences noticeable ? Desire can play the lastest 3D games and multitasking with some apps smoothly. The Snapdragon processor is more than enough , you wont notice the difference between them. Unless you runs 20 30 apps on background , but I am sure the battery will run out very soon =P . The Sense UI is much much better than TouchWiz . TouchWiz icons and UI really sucks , and it is laggy too . I have my Desire for 2 weeks now and I'm happy with it. If LTE is available in my country , I would get the Evo 4G instead =)

my previous phone was a samsung jet, so i have experience with samsung.

the hardware is great ....the support is crap, the software is crap.

they never address any bugs.

they never update the firmware, or if they miraculously do, it is region specific, and then when you plug in your phone to the pc and it asks you if you want to update and you click 'yes', it then tells you that your phone is not supported (p.s. the updates offered are also usually very old outdated ones).

The only way to update the firmware is by flashing with bootleg roms, and, with the jet at least, the promised "phone backup" never materialised, so no point in expecting any of their software to work in the future.

so, if you don't mind flashing your phone every so often, or sticking with android 2.1 (i seriously can't see samsung releasing a firmware update with 2.2 in the next 6 months, if ever), then the galaxy is for you.

noone seems to mentioned about the 16gb that comes with galaxy?

I am looking to buy a new phone, still deciding between galaxy and desire.

cant seem to find any forums or threads about both UIs? there are lots of focus on the hardware such as super amoled screens, processors etc.

Can someone help me out with the Userinterface? i know the touchwiz sucks but i heard the 3.0 version is a lot better and can be comparable to sense? this is from cnet if im not wrong (one of the few measely paragraphs about ui as emphasis are placed on hardware)

lastly, does 16gb not matter? whats the use of having an awesome screen, camera etc if you cant really store media content? esp HD size content? desire is limited to 32gb micro sd card true? while galaxy is also limited to 32gb micro sd card + the 16gb that comes with the phone = 48gb. true? does this not matter?? everyone streaming their media from the web out there or something? am i missing something here?

The 16gb doesn't matter. Eventually 64gb cards will be affordable, you can use several sdcards, whatever. No amount of storage or sport AMOLED will compensate for garbage samsung support, utter lack of software updates, and so on. You want to risk that, you go ahead. I'll be surprised if the thing is even convenient to modify, since Samsung doesn't release their kernels the way HTC does.

Buy a Samsungand enjoy your bugs forever and wait for promised updates that never come.

touchwiz 3 is receiving good reviews.

this fone is being launched in 110 countries and is their flagship fone, 2.2 is already confirmed, i dont think samsung will risk not supporting it.

i think this will get rooted quick and then you can put whatever you want on it.
