Samsung software updates

Hey guys! Amazing phone, no doubt!
I am still undecided between Desire and Galaxy S. I believe HTC will keep sending updates for Desire, but what about Samsung?
They don't have a great reputation in this field. Do they?
Does anyone of you has any info regarding their plans for updates, i.e. newer android versions?
Cheers!

Maybe Desire isn't in the same league but I am certain that HTC will improve its software and keep my phone up to date. 'Cos that's what I am willing to pay for, product and good service as a one package. And I'm still not convinced that Samsung will care about consumers and keep their phones' software up to date after they get their money.

yes htc are good i have had them well before android came along however i think now that samsung are using android in 50% of their phones, that should change especially as they need to do little work to it. even if they dont it can be rooted or like most ppl i will just upgrade the phone after 18 months or so! and would rather have the best device in that time.

It is true HTC do have a good support service and listen to their user base.
I recently campaigned an article and topic in a different forum on the HTC HD2's camera quality.
I had many... many communication talks with the HTC support forwarding a list of names of users and their phone software/ROM details who had the issue.
Within weeks their suuport teams had worked on the problem and issued a ROM Fix on their site.

In other words no matter what phone you purchase it's no good if there is no after sales support. :)

I would'nt hold your breath when it comes to Samsung and Software Updates, In my experience they are just as bad or maybe a tad worse then SE and look how long SE is taking to update to 2.1 on the X10 (which i brought). And Touchwiz 3 looks even more intergrated than SE's UX (what ever its called).

The galaxy looks like a nice phone but not enough to even make me ditch the X10 for and the reasons for this apart from the SW updates and poor support from samsung is also the Camera is not as good and no flash what so ever?, Then theres the fact i still think the X10 has a better design the Samsung looks too much like the Iphone for me in terms of both the Hardware and Software.

Anyway thats just my view but i'm sure most people will be happy with it.

People moan about the galaxy S looking like an Iphone w/c i dont really understand whats to moan about, the Iphone did copy its UI from Palm

Because i can't stand Apple products and i know people will be going to me "what type of Iphone is that" it would drive me nuts!.

I am not defending Apple far from it just i really don't like the look of the Iphone in terms of both Hardware and Software and the Samsung looks about as close as you could get to a Iphone from a Android Device.

There you go same rounded edges, Same shape speaker grill at top both have 1 physical key in the middle at bottom and the icons look very similar.

it will see froyo (2.2) for sure! anything after that...well, going by sammy's track record, i wouldn't hold my breathe for other future updates.

I guess only the Nexus line up will always be updated and by looking at the 2.1 adoption rate the Nexus One had it since feb, a lot of devices dont have 2.1 yet.. X10 is still at 1.6 right ?

Probably the Galaxy S / Pro will hold me off until the next high spec phone comes out, I wish if Google would its next Nexus it will use top of the line CPU and GPU, dont care too much for the cam.

Yes I know and my behold2 will be running 2.1 in July, but that is it! Plus keep in mind the moment does not run touchwiz! So really not the same thing at all. Let me clarify galaxy s will be only touchwiz phone running higher than 2.1 and the moment is NOT going to ever recieve 2.2. The 2.1 update this week was the first and only ANDROID update for the moment. All previous updates for the moment and all those that will follow have been and will be bug fixes only! Sorry man.

Probably thats the only way to keep us from buying new sammy phones, for example if the galaxy S will get all andriod updates then theres no reason for anyone to buy another phone with better specs since the specs of the Galaxy S might even last for more than 2yrs and still be pretty fast.

That's exactly right! There is no incentive for Sammy to update older hand sets when they are trying to sell new ones. Sammy will honor their commitment to bring 2.1 to all their android devices but that's it. No such promises have been made for updates past 2.1 and there won't be any. The galaxy s is the start of sammys new s-life line of phones and only s-life phones will be getting android above 2.1!

Do you have proof of this wild claim??

Now that we are on 2.1, the 2.2 update should not be that difficult. You must remember that we were just upgraded from 1.5 cupcake software, not 1.6 donut or 2.0/2.01 Ecclair.

2.2 will be a different kind of update, More of a performance boost and less of added features. Not that it won't add any new ones like the market update and possibly wifi tether.

From what I hear, 2.2 is going to try to close the fragmentation gap. Will it, I can't say but I think that is the plan.

Yes I can back up the claim! But unfortunately I can't tell u how. Yes I know you will probably call bullsht on me and that's your right, but my source is in deep and never lead me astray yet! I guess time will tell, but I KNOW someday you'll have to swollow your pride and say "sorry for doubting you behold_this...you were right!"
