Do you ever play retro games?

I know emulators for past computers are quite popular, and it's very nostalgic, but how many of those games stand the test of time?
I mean most of them were pretty basic, and obviously don't compare with modern video games graphically. But also they tend to be intensely repetitive. I've fired up Mame in the past and become bored pretty quickly with these games.
Although having said that, I *still* play my all time favourite (Galaxians) on any retro emulator or platform I can find

I'm not particularly nostalgic about the games, I just enjoy playing them.

Are you talking about an early 80s arcade game?

I typically enjoy games from the 16-bit era and up, despite playing games that arrived before then. I also play most genres, except for sports and strategy titles.

Or could be Defender? You know that impossibly hard game that most people lasted about 60 seconds before they were blasted to a million pieces. Anyway, you had to protect your humanoids on the ground from being picked up by alien ships.

Yeah I quite often play them, although might not be as old as you mean.
I don't have quite as long sessions as I do on more modern games, but flutter between a few.
Main ones are Rampart, Toejam & Earl, IK+, NBA Jam etc.

I'm sure most games played in MAME, were really intended for short play, like a few minutes. After all they were originally in the arcades to make their operators money of course. After becoming bored of getting killed at Galaxians for a few minutes because the operator had set it to hardest mode, then moved onto something else, and put coins in Defender or Missile Command or something, and so on until we ran out of money usually..

I wonder if the Atari Greatest Hits app is any good? I've got plenty of Play credits to pay the $10.00 to unlock all 100 games but some of the reviews imply you would still get ads. I can understand getting ads with the free version that just gives you Missile Command but after paying 10 bucks for all the games why would I want to see ads?

I've got Planet Enforcer. It's a good recreation of the original game, captures the spirit of it nicely. Although not as difficult, which is a good thing, as my games last a bit longer.

The Atari Greatest Hits app has Asteroids and Centipede. Both great games. Plus you get Missile Command for free, that's a good game. I think it would work very nicely on a touchscreen.

But I'm not entirely convinced about arcade games on a mobile device - the lack of physical joystick can be a bit limiting and the touchscreen controls are sometimes a bit clunky.

Yeh, worse game of all time according to Engadget or something isn't it? It's game play and plot is pretty awful, but IMO there is worse for the 2600, like Custer's Revenge.

BTW I'm sure the Atari 2600 was one of the most challenging systems for minimalist game programming, think it's something like 4kb ROM, 128bytes of RAM.
