Android 2.2 on Eris

Hate to do this, but I read that the 2.2 OS is approx 450% faster than 2.1. It seems to me that getting that on the Eris would be really compelling.

Does anybody have an idea when (2012) we may get that?

My two cents.

Probably never. It is my understanding that the Eris will not have the hardware to run 2.2. And Eris is EOL, so I don't see them spending time/money to make 2.2 run with the Eris.

It doesn't have the hardware to run 2.1... oh wait. nm.

But seriously, 2.2 is supposed to be much better for both the carrier, manufacturer, app devs, and google themselves. It decentralizes the OS from the enhancements like Sense UI so that the OS can upgrade without having to wait for the manufacturer then carrier to roll out the update. So I really think Verizon would like to upgrade all their phones to 2.2 for the benefit that all their phones will be easy to maintain.

So Sense UI will be one app, not customized for Droid Eris, Droid Incredible, and whatever else it runs on and needed to be coded individually for. So what I'm saying is that Verizon won't have to invest much/any money to update the phone.

The Eris will not be getting 2.2 since its end of life. Only way it will is if someone roots and makes an image.

I don't agree with this, makes much more sense to push 2.2 (since it probably wont be as difficult of an update as it was from 1.5 to 2.1) and then from then on if anything else is needed it will be much easier to update, like someone mentioned earlier.

I also don't really see what on 2.2 requires more hardware except Flash... which obviously we will not be getting, and i'm fine with it. Flash it out the door IMO.

But since the Eris is EOL, Verizon isnt going to give a damn..

Iv been a MS mobile user for years, and once that thing reaches EOL Verizon drops it.. My last MS phone was running Windows 6.0, when 6.5 was out.. I finally put a hacked rooted version of Android 2.1 on it till I got my Eris..

BTW our phones do flash fine..

I read today that Google is slating 2.3 to come out in Q4. Why don't they just stop making iterations, put all of the cool new stuff in to one version, then release it to everyone at the same time instead of releasing one every four months?! That way we could all enjoy the same features instead of feeling disappointed after getting a LONG sought after update because there's a newer version out there.

2012? Dude, how many people will even be using the Eris in 2012? Android will probably be 5 or 6 releases ahead of 2.2 at that point.

The Eris wont ever get on official 2.2 OTA. The only way you're gonna see 2.2 is when the Froyo source code comes out and someone ports it over. Sorry, but the truth stings sometimes :( Its just not gonna happen...

I agree with your statement but how lame is that from HTC's stand point? I mean the phone is not even 7 months old and there done updating it? Pretty crappy on there part.

But 7 months is LIFETIME in the cell phone industry. Even the day the Eris came out, behind the scene HTC was already working on the Incredible and whatnot. Its a sad fact of life, but after 3 months, your cell phone is in danger of being replaced by "something better".

This is just a shot in the dark but Eris skipped 1.6 and 2.0 for a reason. Maybe they will skip 2.2 and go to the next major release. Just my 2 cents.

And as jcase and other devs have said. If you are rooted, you will be able to use 2.2 and any other future release. Look at the G1, first device and Google went on record to say it will not be able to have 2.2; the devs over there got it up and working and its a functional ROM. Mind you, a lot of features are missing because they had to gut it to fit on the phone, but it does work.

Point is, stop making threads about every future release because who wants more dead kittens?

Eris is a re-branded Hero, i don't think the Hero will be getting 2.2 at all...so should i talk to Sprint and all the European carriers? This falls on HTC.
Sorry if you don't like the answers you're given. I guess I could make a post, claim I e-mailed HTC about future Android updates, and make up an answer that I say is from them. Hehe, I could say something like "customers will be able to receive free CPU upgrades and that HTC will support our phones with future Android updates forever". Would that make you happy ?
