I have the Gmail and HTC mail apps running. when I get a new gmail, I get a notification that I have unread email (I'm not sure which app that comes from).

the HTC app has a little # that tells me how many unread messages I have. my Gmail app does not do that. should it?

There is a widget called "Gmail Unread Count" that will do this. The icon is just like gmail's but you can customize the color and also has an option for a "3d" icon.

Gmail Unread Count - Android app on AppBrain

Been using this since day 1 and has been working like a charm. And like Tomoko said, the icon is customizable which is a nice little feature to get for free. +1 on this

It doesn't, but you can download the app 'SMS Unread Count' from the market.

Then, add the widget to your homescreen. Make sure to change the type from 'sms' to 'gmail'

Then, voila, you have the number.

SMS Unread Count is the best, better than gmail unread count. Here's why. With SMS unread count you can use it for all 3. Messages, gmail and missed calls. Also gives a choice of icons, unread count text size. It's also been more reliable than guc. There were times it said I had unread gmail, but when I clicked on it nothing showed.

Can you use it for all 3 at the same time? When I go into the settings for it, it's only letting me choose Messaging, Dialer OR Gmail, not more than one. That's why I'm using both, but if I can do both with one app, I'd much rather do that.

Since these are all three different applications, requiring 3 different shortcuts, you have to add three copies of the SMS Unread Widget and configure them differently.
