Verizon XL VS. Google XL

Worth it to wait out for the unlocked bootloader version from Google, or just get one on the way from VZW?

Kind of think it's a little shortsighted on google's part to be so unprepared, although I think the Note debacle has a lot to do with it.

if you plan on going overseas, I would NOT buy the Verizon phone....
you will find that it won't work on ALL the carriers over there.

My understanding is that the Verizon version has the same carrier compatibility as the Google one. After all, you can use the Google one on Verizon and the Verizon one on Fi, AT&T, T-Mobile, or any other GSM carrier.

That said, the update question remains to be answered. Verizon promises that they'll release updates at the same time as Google - but anyone who owned a CDMA Galaxy Nexus will rightly doubt that promise. And we really don't know how updates will be handled for a Verizon model used on another network.

There are just way too many questions, caveats, and concerns with the Verizon Pixel. Just buy from Google and avoid that potential trouble.

Verizon will NOT provide you OTA updates UNLESS you are on a VZW cellsite...

I have proven that over and over and over, and did not have to move more than 5 miles to prove it.

When I first moved to Green Country where the high grassy plains grow weeds, I always roamed off of something other than a Verizon tower. I have called in to CS many times to change a phone on my number. Mind you, I already owned the phones, I just needed to move them around on the numbers.

They can't do that, I had to get in the car and drive 5 miles south of my home to find a Verizon tower and then parked the car for an hour while they went through the drill of getting a very old Galaxy S back online again.... you do what you have to do when a phone breaks.... that is why I always save my old phones. at least you can make/take phone calls.... even if it is CDMA only...

but, lesson is.... IF you are NOT using a Verizon cellsite, you can kiss OTA updates goodbye.

BUT, all is not lost.... you can use Kies to give you an update off the internet. dunno that I would want to risk that 12,000 miles away from a VZW tower, but hey, it can be done.

The misinformation I received at Verizon told me enough. Their representative insisted the pixel could only be used on Vzw, regardless of where it was purchased. Now im crossing my fingers waiting on the email to get one on the way from google.

This has been a very good question. The reason is right now I believe Best Buy is taking roughly 20 dollars off the cost of the device, PLUS 100 Best Buy gift card AND a Google Chromecast. All that has got to be worth it right? I have read Verizon will be pushing out the updates the same day Google releases them. What are your thoughts on that, would a gift card and Chromcast be appealing to you. I mean even if you didn't want that you would still be able to sell them to get it least a little money towards all that cash for the Pixel.

The hinging factor there is that best buy isn't offering the 128gb last time I checked.

Thanks for letting us know. Please do report back once the first updates start rolling out - I'm really curious to see how the VZW Pixel updates will be handled when no longer on their network.

Awesome to hear! Why buy it from Verizon if you were going to cancel anyway? Why not just get it through Google and not worry about if updates will or won't come to you?

Might have been an issue with availability. Verizon versions seemed to be easier to purchase than the Google Play ones.
